Biden seeks to boost fuel economy to thwart Trump rollback

DETROIT - The Biden administration wants automakers to raise gas mileage and cut tailpipe pollution between now and model year 2026, and it has won a voluntary commitment Thursday from the industry that electric vehicles will comprise up to half of U.S. sales by the end of the decade.

The moves are big steps toward President Joe Biden’s pledge to cut emissions and battle climate change as he pushes a history-making shift in the U.S. from internal combustion engines to battery-powered vehicles. They also reflect a delicate balance to gain both industry and union support for the environmental effort, with the future promise of new jobs and billions in new federal investments in electric vehicles.

The administration on Thursday announced there would be new mileage and anti-pollution standards from the Environmental Protection Agency and Transportation Department, part of Biden’s goal to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. It said the auto industry had agreed to a target that 40% to 50% of new vehicle sales be electric by 2030.

Both the regulatory standards and the voluntary target will be included in an executive order that Biden plans to sign later Thursday.

The standards, which have to go through the regulatory process including public comments, would reverse fuel economy and anti-pollution rollbacks done under President Donald Trump. At that time, the increases were reduced to 1.5% annually through model year 2026.

Still, it remained to be seen how quickly consumers would be willing to embrace higher mileage, lower-emission vehicles over gas-guzzling SUVs, currently the industry’s top seller.

Since the author is a D one expects their opinion to support policy that leads to a One World Order situation. I have also find it instructional to keep in mind that most of the folks who lean towards OWO live in the anthills known as the ‘Big Cities’. In these anthills nothing that is essential to life is more than a few blocks away from their living quarters. EVs and public transportation is fine in that situation.

This is of course, not the case for most real Americans who may use a grocery store that is 15 miles down the highway. The anthill dwellers cannot fathom such a situation.

I am trying to remember the time when the United States government funded the system of gasoline stations that we currently have across the nation.

Oh, that’s right. They didn’t. The free market did that. Why should this be any different? The root of the problem is that we need to re-strengthen the 10th amendment which restricts the power of the federal government to what is stated in the constitution and no more. They’ve totally destroyed the concept of interstate trade and perverted it to mean anything they wanted to mean.

And this is coming from a guy that just bought an electric car.

"The Biden administration...has won a voluntary commitment Thursday from the industry that electric vehicles will comprise up to half of U.S. sales by the end of the decade."

"The Industry" is delusional. I'm a retired executive (their description) from this industry, and am continuing working in it as an engineer as I have done for more than half a century. This gives me some authority to describe their delusion. I certainly personally knew many delusional employees during the times leading up to the GM and Chrysler bankruptcies. In order for there to be half of vehicle sales by then, there have to be half of the vehicle buyers by then, as well.

In order to go into production by "the end of the decade", the vehicles must be on the drawing boards today. None can be awaiting invention of new technology. Most buyers of new cars use these cars as their primary means of transportation. This means going to work, schools, shopping and vacations. There is simply not the technology nor the infrastructure to support these vehicles that will be in every neighborhood in that time. I appreciate that half of new car sales is clearly not half of vehicles on the road on that date, even if the sales acceleration only happens near the end of the decade. Nevertheless, most people expect to take their new cars on vacations, and get to their destinations anywhere in the country quickly, without "range anxiety". That alone precludes much of the population. As for fast charging stations all along expressways and major highways, good luck. I haven't seen a single one, ever. And I do a lot of travelling.

IIRC, John Roberts wanted to ensure Bammy’s legacy. He sure did.

As with Obamacare, Scotus will approve of our energy and transportation enslavement.
