Infrastructure bill floats national mileage fee despite Biden's $400,000 tax hike 'red line'
Yahoo/Washington Examiner ^ | August 3, 2021 | Christian Datoc

The $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure accord would institute a multiyear "national motor vehicle per-mile user fee pilot" program that, without future intervention from the White House, could potentially violate one of President Joe Biden's previously stated red lines.

Top White House officials emphatically stated for months that paying for the infrastructure investments by indexing gas taxes to inflation or instituting new electric vehicle mileage fees were hard red lines for the president on the grounds that they would raise taxes on people earning less than $400,000 per year.

Yet, the new per-mile user fee pilot, outlined in section 13002 of the bill, does leave those people open to tax vulnerabilities pegged to personal vehicle mileage. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen are directed to provide recommendations to Congress three years into the pilot's life cycle, at which time Congress could choose to pass new legislation implementing national per-mile fees fully as an established funding source for infrastructure improvements.

Still, White House officials disputed the idea that the inclusion of the pilot program in the infrastructure bill guarantees the establishment of a future, nationalized mileage fee and suggested that, depending on how Buttigieg and Yellen's recommendations shake out, the White House could oppose legislation implementing the tax.

This seems like the perfect govt program.
Establishing thousands of “meter reader” federal union jobs to inspect vehicles for mileage.

Well, yeah, but that will be done in place of a gasoline tax, so it will be fairer.

HAHAHAHAHA

NO ONE WITH A FUNCTIONING BRAIN WILL BELIEVE THIS FOR A SECOND.

... raise taxes on people earning less than $400,000 per year

Campaign promises are ephemeral as ... toilet paper? JoeB was VP to Obama, the same one who PLEDGED that his Health Care would reduce individual costs! The same one who told 'Joe the Plumber' that at some point 'you make too much money!' Yet they got the sheeple to elect them! BAH!!!!

They have to do this because their next move is to push for all vehicles to the electric. And all their minions would whine if they taxed the charging stations.

I think the biggest problem in 2008 was that McLame was the first POTUS candidate in history to endorse his opponent.

How are they going to know? I’m betting that they are going to require all cars to have a transponder that sends the mileage to Central Computer every time you go through an intersection.

I can guarantee that “self driving” cars will be reporting their mileage to Central Computer every step of the way. Additional bill at the end of the month.

They have to finance reparations somehow. They will tax the ones who go to work an additional amount for mileage so they can pay the ones who don’t go to work to sit home, swig malt liquor, and hate the ones who do go to work.

I think it is a great idea. Mileage Tax. People will have to dig out their check books and write Uncle Sam a Tax Check.

Then perhaps they will finally begin to realize what a rapacious predator the Government really is.

As it is now the vast majority of working Americans have their taxes automatically deducted from their pay checks. It doesn’t leave a mark on them.

I would guess the majority of American home owners with a mortgage pay, with their monthly payment, into an Escrow account from which the Mortgage company sends to the county/state.

Most Americans don’t have a clue on much taxes are on a gallon of gas, that they pay at the pump.

In fact there are very few taxes that require the individual to sit down, write a check, and see their account balance go down just to pay taxes.

The Democrat Official will have to come up with a way to hoodwink the taxpayer once again.

My bet is they will come up with a average miles per gallon and add it at the pump.

Americans would revolt if they had to pay their taxes themselves.
