"The RCMP have since clarified that she worked for a helicopter company that transported tree planters in and out of the area."

Planting trees is almost a rite of passage fro young Canadians. The job is piece work and an energetic youngster can make a bundle over the course of a three month summer. Very common summer job.

Yes, Canada is a natural resource economy. They plant trees, usually softwoods, so that 40 years later they can come back and harvest them. Rinse and repeat.

Attacks by black bears however are rare. A physician was attacked and killed while camping with her family on the Missinaibi river in Northern Ontario about 15 years ago. Only other black bear fatality I'm aware of.

The best defense against bears is Bear Spray.

It’s more powerful than mace. You can find a lot of YouTube videos about its use and effectiveness.

I think it would take a large caliber slug and a few of them to stop a bear. It’s my understanding that bears take pains to avoid encounters with humans if , and that is IF they know humans are around.

From what I know if you are going to be in bear county it’s advisable to make some sort of noise, in this woman case a small transistor radio(if those things are still made) or a ‘’boom box’’ might have helped.

Unless you’re dealing with a mama bear with cubs or an injured or very hungry bear, given an escape route in an encounter with humans bears usually opt to scram.

Out in the woods is when they come after you.

The bear obviously didn’t believe in MMGW.

Curious to know if A) She was menstruating, B) Can the smell of blood incite a bear to attack?
