That spirit seems to have been largely replaced by a collective mentality of dependence on government. So the question is how many people really want to shrink the size, power and scope of government? Not that many I think.

Because the commie dems know a federal government lockdown is simply not permissible under our Constitution.

As we’ve already seen, the Dems could care less about the Constitution. Since there is nobody to stop them they feel free to push whatever boundaries may have once existed. The courts and the GOP will dutifully roll over for them.
The reason so many people went along back then was because COVID was thought to have a 5% death rate (and an even higher completed case fatality rate). We were doing what we thought was prudent.
Now that it’s known that the death rate is actually more like a fraction of 1%, and our health authorities seem to be ding dongs, I’m not sure what will happen with the new round of lockdowns.

The commie dems don't care about the Constitution but the Constitution cares about them and it doesn't like them very much. The GOP may roll over, play dead, chase parked cars, whatever they want but the people in some states are NOT going to have it and they know it. So you must ask why would the commies risk poking a bear that may just rip them to pieces? To me the only answer is they feel for some reason they must change the news cycle and at least attempt to bring back fear. Why? I believe they are afraid the AZ audit is going to show without a doubt that Trump in fact carried AZ by a large margin. If Trump carried Arizona the people will see very quickly he likely carried the other battle ground states as well. Next will come the realization by millions of people that we must accept the truth about what we all saw on November 3rd and that it can't be allowed to stand. We saw massive criminal election fraud literally overturn the will of the people and the consent of the governed will be revoked. At that point biden and harris will be forced to resign and Pelosi will be sworn in.

The US Government can’t impose a lockdown, and most states won’t.
I don’t dispute your logic and am even sympathetic with it. I’m just pointing out that the Dems don’t share your concerns because they are confident they can roll over anyone in their way.
I would be more sanguine if some semblance of respect for the constitution and our laws still existed, but they don’t. If you’re on the Left you get to play by your own rules. So far, there isn’t much push back against them so in their minds there’s no reason to fear any reprisals. Consequently they keep pushing the envelope.
One thing we and they know for sure: the GOP won’t stand up to them.
The author’s request to pray was not in reference to the virus itself but, instead, this new normal of complacency that has swept our nation as a result of everything that has happened with this virus. We need to pray to God that He enables people to see this new normal of complacency in themselves and wake up from it. This “insight and wake up” in each individual is something only God can do. On the other hand, if your question is still why would God allow this viral pandemic to occur in the first place, I believe you will find John MacArthur’s YouTube video titled “Why Does God Allow So Much Suffering And Evil?” very informative. I thought it was very instructive and very good and, to me, John interjected just the right amount of humor into it to liven it up. It’s a long video (one hour and five minutes) but it’s well worth the watch. I hope it helps!
