ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Florida reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the state’s highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic, according to federal health data released Saturday, as its theme park resorts again started asking visitors to wear masks indoors.
The state has become the new national epicenter for the virus, accounting for around a fifth of all new cases in the U.S. as the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has resisted mandatory mask mandates and vaccine requirements, and along with the state Legislature, has limited local officials’ ability to impose restrictions meant to stop the spread of COVID-19. DeSantis on Friday barred school districts from requiring students to wear masks when classes resume next month.
The latest numbers were recorded on Friday and released on Saturday on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website. The figures show how quickly the number of cases is rising in the Sunshine State: only a day earlier, Florida reported 17,093 new daily cases. The previous peak in Florida had been 19,334 cases reported on Jan. 7, before the availability of vaccinations became widespread.
The state reported 409 deaths this week, bringing the total to more than 39,000 since its first in March 2020. The state’s peak happened in mid-August 2020, when 1,266 people died over a seven-day period. Deaths usually follow increases in hospitalizations by a few weeks.

I also heard from someone that they are hospitalizing people for the sort of thing that would normally be “go home, take 2 aspirin and call me in the mooring.”
One of the big hospitals in Jax actually had to apologize and send out a correction assuring people that there’d been a misunderstanding, they really weren’t overwhelmed and, yes, if you were having a heart attack you could go to the ER. Crazy, but of course the hospitals benefit from overstating their covid numbers too.

I always ignore the “daily” counts and pay attention to the 7-day moving averages of COVID-19 “cases” (and deaths, hospitalizations, etc.) which largely smooths out and eliminates the reporting anomalies. Florida should surpass its previous peak 7-day average for “cases” in the next day or two. But NOT FOR DEATHS!

How many of these new cases are from those persons who are vaccinated?
And why don’t these so-called doctors give these patients hydoxychloroquine or invermectin in order to tamp down the virus?
I’m surprised these doctors aren’t sued by angry family members.

I see the MSM is busy causing havoc again.
Another relevant statistic would be how many tests were done in the given period. Then that could be compared to states with lower “case” numbers against their number of tests and number of positive test results.
Even with that drawing conclusions would be sketchy without numerous other factors accounted for.
This hoax has no end of permutations all ripe for exploitation and our political betters are exploiting as many as they can.
Just took my daughter there on vacation. Two more days and I will know how well natural immunity works.

AP cheers? No. I think the people around here who provide highly misleading information on the vaccines and other issues minimizing virus are the ones cheering on the virus. I sure hope the people on this board glorifying this virus become a tiny minority in this country.
There appears to be about 1% mortality with 20,000 cases a day. So 200 deaths a day is in the tea leaves. However the wild card is Delta. In the UK the deaths from Delta are 1 in 500. UK is 99% Delta. Let's hope so, and that it goes further, to 99% like the UK.
