Simone Biles shrugs and says 'there's more to life than just gymnastics' after making a shock exit from team final 'to focus on her mental health' - clearing the way for Russia to take gold in a dramatic upset at the Tokyo Olympics

Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles took a cue from tennis pro Naomi Osaka by pulling out of the team final after a shock error on her first event, insisting that she needed to 'focus on her mental health' because 'there is more to life than just' sport.

Speaking about her sensational exit from competition, which cleared the way for Team USA's Russian rivals to claim gold in a dramatic upset, the 24-year-old revealed that it came as a result of her personal mental health struggles and her desire to prioritize her 'wellbeing'.

'To focus on my wellbeing,' she told reporters of her reasons for pulling out of the competition following a sensational flub on the vault, echoing the statement issued by Naomi, 23, when she pulled out of the French Open earlier this year because of her own mental health struggles.

Shrugging, Simone added: 'And you know, there's more to life than just gymnastics.

'It is very unfortunate that it has to happen at this stage because I definitely wanted this Olympics to go a little bit better but again, we'll take it one day at a time and we're going to see how the rest goes.'

The gymnast also insisted that her decision to pull out of the competition after just one event - when she was due to take part in all four - was made, in part, to help her team, saying that she 'didn't want to risk the team medal' with 'her screw up'.

'I thought it was best that these girls took over the job which they absolutely did,' she continued. 'They are Olympic silver medalists now and they should be really proud of themselves now for how well they did last minute.'

And to think that they chose Osaka to light the Olympic Flame, instead of someone like Shun Fujimoto.

That says it all about the decline of The Olympics.

Her gold medal this time:

Unbleached, of course.

Seriously? Women in tennis have always been higher up than women in other sports, and tennis is the one sport where the women are at least as likely to be famous as the men.

Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Seles, and right up to the Williams' sisters, sure. But all these 'ova's and other Eastern Europeans with unpronounceable names.... I don't think they have great followings in the US.

“...we’ll take it one day at a time...”

Taking one day at a time means you flub it one day (or one minute) and you have a new chance the next day (or next minute) to go at it again.

Granted, some sports require that attitude more than others. A goalie IS going to get scored on every game usually, a pitcher is going to throw a home-run ball most games, etc. They need to be able to shrug those off and move on quickly.

But even a flub in a sport like gymnastics where they are nearly perfect all the time - well, you have to move on and “take it day by day”. Not give up in the middle of what to many is the biggest sporting event they will ever be in. Especially in the team event. What a loser.

I just watched the Fujimoto video. Awe inspiring.
And I realized the difference here.
For Fujimoto it was all about sacrifice.
For Simone Biles and BLM in general it’s all about “what i deserve, my right, entitlement.
It’s an ugly thing to watch when reality sometimes hit and “number one” goes to someone else.

IIRC it was Glenn Beck earlier today who pointed out that Simone was one of the gymnasts who was sexually abused years ago and maybe for some reason she is reliving that experience now and just can’t focus.

I think the truly great ones, across all sports and eras, are able to shrug off their defeats - or screw-ups - quickly and totally and move on to bigger and better things. I am not knocking those who are competitively destroyed by one devastating loss or performance. That is after all why the great champions - Nicklaus, Brady, Federer, et al - are so rare.

I read an interview with Arnold Palmer. He won only one US Open - no shame there, one US Open would be a career for many golfers - but was so close so many other times and never closed it out. He said it was so hard to maintain that indescribable edge necessary for world-class high-level competition, and you never knew how or when you could lose it forever.

Phil Mickelson and Louie Oosthuizen are experts :)

It’s a copycat! Nothing original!

Bile to the country that made her what she is, copied verbatim what the Japanese bi*ch did to her country in the French Open tennis tournament!

lebron and his buddy did the same to their country in their garbage sport!

The time will come when non-woke coaches will have to ask: excuse me Sir/Ma’am/ LGBTQRSXYZ/shit/crap/whoever/whatever….I’m tired already, if you qualify to represent America in whatever competition, will you kindly tell us if your Highness will give 100% effort to win or lose?

I got tired writing this already. I think we’re done unless something horrendous has to happen to pull us up from the abyss. Worthless government, worthless citizens taking shots at their country, worthless media covering up by cheering for all of the above drops in a bucket!

I just don’t want to think about solutions….

This Olympics is turning into one huge international cluster you-know-what. Ratings in the toilet, local TV stations are already have to provide make goods for the advertisers since they aren’t getting what was promised, and now this debacle.

All of the truly greats say their losses and learning to overcome adversity was a big part of making them attain membership among the group of greatest.

Phil has his multiple Master's and PGAs and one British Open to comfort him. Louis.... only the one British Open. I predict he will break through again though. Sam Snead never won the US Open either. If all golfers are to be judged on whether or not they won The Open, ninety-nine and forty-four one hundredths are to be found wanting.

Greg Norman, The Great White.... Can of Tuna! He does have his multi-multi-multi millions as a fallback.

In one interview after blowing another major, Norman said he could master anything he put his mind to, even brain surgery. Well, I'd never let him operate on me, and certainly never on a Sunday!

Yep, my point being they come in 2nd a lot. I’d be happy to come in second in the Open :) It would probably mean I was a multi millionaire golfer.

19, Phil with 9. It’s an indicator of a Hall of Fame Golfer as unlikely as it seems.
