Amazon Has Its Own ‘Key’ to Thousands of Apartment Buildings Across America

Amazon’s “Key for Business” system allows delivery drivers to access apartment buildings without having to be buzzed in and the system has been installed in thousands of apartment buildings across the United States. The e-commerce giant reportedly entices building managers with gift cards as incentives to install the system.

The Verge reports that Amazon’s “Key for Business” system allows delivery drivers to gain access to apartment buildings without having to be buzzed in, and has been installed in thousands of buildings across the United States. The company is reportedly pushing to get the system installed in more buildings, offering free installations and $100 gift cards to building managers as incentives.

The system is designed to make it easier for Amazon drivers to make deliveries to apartment buildings; drivers don’t have to wait for residents or a concierge to buzz them in but can use the system to gain temporary access to lobbies via the Amazon Flex app.

In a technical breakdown of the system published by Amazon in 2019, the system reportedly increased the success of first-time deliveries from 96 to around 98 percent. The technology arrived as a pilot program in 2018 before getting an official launch the following year.

While Amazon has a similar system for homeowners to install in private properties, Key for Business is installed by building managers who reportedly are not under any obligation to gain permission from tenants to install the system or inform them when it’s in use.

Amazon is reportedly pushing to expand the number of buildings the system is installed in and is pitching Key for Business to building managers and partnering with locksmiths to offer installations, sometimes free of charge.

I’ve wondered about these closed gates at gated communities and fire trucks.

Here’s $100. Thanks for giving us unfettered access to your residents. We’ll absolutely NEVER abuse that. Ever.

They (the owners of the gates) provide local LEO and first responders with the codes.

there’s usually a pass code number they use. and it is probably “Common” and unchanging.

and it could even require 2 step validation (I can punch in my apartment number, it’ll ring my phone, and then I can press a numeric that will open the gate)

In our city there is special gate hardware that gated communities/apartments have to install for FD access.

They used to give Santa the key to the city when he arrived in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Interesting. As long as the landlord is willing to assume liability I guess.

Between this and jab bribes, it seems it takes very little to get people to sell themselves out.

“I’ve wondered about these closed gates at gated communities and fire trucks.”

Here, at least, if you have a gate or some sort of access issue, you’d call the police non-emergency line and tell them. If you have a gate code or house code they’ll enter it into the 911 system so that if there’s a 911 call that information shows up and the 911 operator will tell the responding unit the information.

The liability of the proposed system is unbelievable. It’s a crazy idea.

Once Alexa welcomes Jimmy inside, she’ll tell him were the goods are and record him assaulting the family.

—” have to install for FD access.”

Standard stuff, IIRC used most everywhere... Knox Box Rapid Entry System.

That’s more to store a key that only the FD has access to. We have basically the electronic remote access version of that. They don’t have to dismount and open a Knox box, they have a special remote.

Not my condo.
No smart phone. (I use a new AT&T 4g flip phone).
No Alexa or other voice device crap.
No Nest thermostat.
No smart locks on my doors.
No smart ‘fridge.
Just a simple perimeter burglar alarm and motion sensors.
