What to Know About How Those ‘Fugitive’ Texas Democrats Will Pay for Stay in DC
The Daily Signal ^ | 25 July 2021 | Fred Lucas

Special interest donors are covering much of the cost for Texas Democratic lawmakers to stay in pricey Washington, D.C., hotel rooms, but Texas taxpayers are still losing close to $500,000 on expenses for a legislative session that isn’t happening.

Texas lawmakers who fled the legislative session in Austin for the nation’s capital ultimately will have to report all of the private money pouring in for the self-professed “fugitive” Democrats. That amount includes at least $600,000 from the political action committee of former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who ran for president in 2020.

These Democrats have raised money from other sources as well to cover lodging, meals, and other expenses.

Racking up costs and private donations, more than 50 Democrats, along with 12 paid staffers, on Friday marked the halfway point of the special legislative session they abandoned back home. Democrats fled to deny the state Legislature’s Republican majority a quorum to vote on an election reform bill.

The session ends Aug. 6, after which the Democrats are expected to return home.

Has Abbott stopped giving these worthless cretins their paychecks? Didn’t think so.

I say make them submit to a drug and alcohol test when they return.

They should have been made to sleep in the same garage used by the National Guards stationed around the Kremlin on Kapitol Hill.

Note that the Guards as far as I know still have not had their expenses paid.

The next special session should start August 7. Abbot should keep the legislature in session until the flee-baggers show up and do the jobs they were elected to do.

He should also deny they per diem claims since they weren't at work.

As far as I know, two have returned and as expected, Abbott has not made any arrests. Weak.

Gift??? I believe someone pointed out that there’s a Texas statute about “gifts” meant to influence a vote - I believe it is called a bribe. Why hasn’t the Tx AG filed charges???

Texas House Democrats are guilty of accepting a bribe to withhold their vote under the Texas Constitution, and should have their House seats vacated.

According to the Texas State Constitution:

Article 16 Section 41:

Sec. 41. BRIBERY AND SOLICITATION OR ACCEPTANCE OF BRIBES. Any person who shall, directly or indirectly, offer, give, or promise, any money or thing of value, testimonial, privilege or personal advantage, to any executive or judicial officer or member of the Legislature to influence him in the performance of any of his public or official duties, shall be guilty of bribery, and be punished in such manner as shall be provided by law. And any member of the Legislature or executive or judicial officer who shall solicit, demand or receive, or consent to receive, directly or indirectly, for himself, or for another, from any company, corporation or person, any money, appointment, employment, testimonial, reward, thing of value or employment, or of personal advantage or promise thereof, for his vote or official influence, or for withholding the same, or with any understanding, expressed or implied, that his vote or official action shall be in any way influenced thereby, or who shall solicit, demand and receive any such money or other advantage matter or thing aforesaid for another, as the consideration of his vote or official influence, in consideration of the payment or promise of such money, advantage, matter or thing to another, shall be held guilty of bribery, within the meaning of the Constitution, and shall incur the disabilities provided for said offenses, with a forfeiture of the office they may hold, and such other additional punishment as is or shall be provided by law.

While the seats are vacant, a new quorum can be reached with the sitting House. That's when they can take the vote on election reform.

The Texas Constitution is there for all to see. The question now is whether the Republicans have the nerve to act like Democrats and enforce their own Constitution to kick the fleeing Democrats out of the House that they vacated.

Perhaps they need by-laws with stipulation that failure to report for duty for so many days (5?) results is removal from office with the exception of illness, or other valid emergency.

He said he would have them arrested and brought to the legislature. Even IF he arrests them, nothing will happen to them.

They need to be taxed for the “gifts” as additional personal income. If they misfile, its tax evasion.

He didn’t - but he didn’t have to. The legislature’s budget was one of the things the Dems walked out of and left dead on the floor. They aren’t getting paid because of their own fault.

There is no state income tax in Texas for them to evade.

They should be immediately jailed and held without bond indefinitely....until the Jan 6 protestors are freed.
Abbott is “all hat and no cattle” for threatening them with jail and then letting run free.
