Japan's Olympic organizers lied about its weather, and now athletes are paying the price

The finish line of the men’s triathlon Monday morning looked something like a battlefield scene, bodies sprawled out on ground, trainers coming to the aid of overheated athletes, even a few being helped off with their arms draped over shoulders.

This despite the Olympics moving the start time to 6:30 a.m. in an effort to beat the heat that, as these Tokyo Games have proven, remains undefeated. Temps still reached 85 degrees with a relative humidity of 67.1 percent at start time.

No, the Japanese don’t have to apologize for the weather here — the searing sun, the sky high temps, the pea-soup humidity. No one tells Mother Nature what to do.

But as athletes continue to wilt and wither in these conditions, they do owe everyone an apology for this much: They lied like hell about it.

“With many days of mild and sunny weather, this period provides an ideal climate for athletes to perform their best.”

This is all on the IOC then if they really believed the Japanese committee's claims about the weather in Tokyo during July. There was plenty of data to indicate otherwise.

No problem. The female athletes will handle the climate better with more testosterone.

What a stupid headline. Like the weather in Japan is a closely guarded secret?!?

Good questions. I wasn’t really aware of typical July Tokyo weather. I know July is a mid summer month, and these are the Summer Olympics. But they could schedule Summer Olympics at a cooler time of year. They don’t have to be in July.

If I recall correctly, the Sydney 2000 Olympics ran from mid September to the end of that month. And since the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere, those games took place in early spring there.

They’ll just say that Climate Change is happening faster than expected. Doesn’t have to be true in any way. As long as it fits the Narrative.

Why is it that “the best and the brightest” always miss the obvious? Check a weather app. It only takes a few clicks.

Maybe the IOC members were too busy being wined, dined, feted and bribed to actually vet the proposals? I’m pretty sure the IOC bigwigs aren’t sweating in Tokyo.

Tokyo experiences a rainy season right after a short spring. Then, Boom! muggy summer. Mushi Atsui! as the locals call it. Humid and hot! On top of that, Tokyo sits in a basin. So the humidity just sits there! No secret.

We most certainly do! If I drive to the store to get groceries I will probably generate enough greenhouse gases to drive up global temperature at least a degree or more. And I will probably cause a BIPOC LGBTQ+ child in the Amazon to starve to death and cause equity in economic outcomes to be ruined in Lower Slobovia. Don't tell me we don't tell Mother Nature what to do!

Millions of gaijin have lived through Japan’s tropical-humidity summers. In terms of weather, the best months for the Olympics would have been either May or October, especially if Tokyo had shared some of the events with other cities—imagine, for just one example, the symbolism of Olympic baseball being played in Hiroshima Stadium? With the Shinkansen, anywhere in Japan is readily accessible. What is amazing is not that the Japanese Olympic leadership lied about the weather, but that they got away with it—any American who has been stationed in Japan over the last 75 years knows better.

Yeah, great idea to have the host of the Olympics be an island nation in the temperate zone during the PEAK of tropical storm season. What could go wrong?

June, too soon
July, stand by
August, look out you must
September, remember
October, all over

None of my Japanese mates planned to attend the Olympics. They all said “No one’s in Tokyo in July, they all head west up into the cool mountain areas.”

Since when is 85 searing? Even with 67% humidity that’s basically the same weather as LA. I don’t remember complaints about the weather in ‘84. They are the SUMMER games, summer gets warm.

The COVID-19 re-scheduling probably had a lot to do with July instead of June or Sept.

Indeed. It's well-known that Japan has an east-coast marine climate, like the northeastern US, with four seasons that include hot, humid summers.

My guess is not much different from South Florida this time of the year. From what I know, foreign worker's families leave Japan during the summer months if they can afford it.

Tokyo’s weather is pretty close to St.Louis’s weather. While St. Louis did host an Olympics in 1904, people were tougher back then.

Dumb.

The Japanese basically said that the weather would probably be mild and sunny during the event just like I’m sure every attempted summer host has said about their city. That’s kind of a subjective description to begin with, so the only real discussion should have involved climatological records and what the host country would do about any weather concerns. Now, if they had manipulated or lied about the actual data, then I’d be more sympathetic to this guy’s position, but he’s basically complaining that the brochure said come enjoy our wonderful weather. Surely the IOC didn’t rely just on that.
