Van Wyksdorp, South Africa – As South Africa erupted into chaos, my thoughts turned to the United States — a great country brought low by the same toxic and demented racial politics that set afire my homeland last week.
As I write, shell-shocked South Africans are trying to muster a response to an orgy of arson and looting. Cargo vessels are being turned away from some of our largest harbors, because it’s too dangerous to unload them. Hundreds of thousands face hunger thanks to the destruction of warehouses and disruption of food-supply chains. Tens of thousands of jobs and small businesses have been destroyed; the property damage is incalculable.
Former President Jacob Zuma’s refusal to be held accountable for corruption triggered this mayhem. Rather than face the prospect of imprisonment and disgrace, he seems to have attempted a preemptive coup against his successor.
But this is just part of the picture. The overarching truth is that an idea pushed South Africa to the brink. You guys know this idea, because it animates the sermons of critical race theorists trying to force you to take the knee and atone for your supposed sins. I am going to call it the Beautiful Idea, because it is beautiful in a way — but also dangerous.

Democrat ruled parts of the US are often worse than South Africa.
The Beautiful Idea holds that all humans are born with identical gifts and should turn out to be clones of one another in a just society. Conversely, any situation in which disparity survives is in itself proof of injustice. This is the line promoted by CRT pundit Ibram X. Kendi, who blames all racial disparities on racist policies.Look up the Tocqueville Paradox:
The Tocqueville effect (also known as the Tocqueville paradox) is the phenomenon in which, as social conditions and opportunities improve, social frustration grows more quicklyTranslation: the greater the equality the more the anger at differences. Explains so much of our current situation.
Toquceville effect, wikipedia
They fell for the “equal outcome” instead of the better “equal opportunity” line. And in the end, everyone (almost) loses.
Chicongo.
“Translation: the greater the equality the more the anger at differences. Explains so much of our current situation.”
Absolutely.
There’s also this from Tocqueville...
“There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality which excites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.”
The guy was one of the most astute and penetrating observer of human nature.
Good article, thanks for posting.
Paging Harrison Bergeron. Clean up in aisle 7.
I think so too. Makes me want to read a good bio of him.
“They fell for the “equal outcome” instead of the better “equal opportunity” line. And in the end, everyone (almost) loses.”
Probably the biggest mistake our founders made was to include the “all men are created equal” phrase in the Declaration.
It is the most self evident lie in the world - a noble, well sounding, feel good lie, perhaps. but a lie nonetheless.
And it is used by leftist demagogues and race pimps to justify their crusades for “equity” - equality of outcomes.
And if you accept the noble lie that “all men are created equal”, then their crusades are logically justified. If we’re all equal, how come the majority of certain groups of people (say blacks) always end up with the short end of the stick? Must be a certain group oppressing the other group.
Until we accept the self evident truth that we’re all different and that groups of easily identifiable people (ie. races) are different, we’ll be forever at each others throat.
As the French like to say, “Vive la Difference!”
That’s the objective of equity ideology. That’s what it’s all about. Listen to 5 minutes of CRT and that becomes abundantly clear. The Democrats are actively and maliciously trying to destroy America.
Tribalism has been with man almost from the beginning.
A lot like Detroit when you come down to it.
After looking closely at South Africa, its surprising how similar one-party government, corruption, welfare state, intense regulation, racial and victimhood ideology are in places like Chicago and Philadelphia compared with South AFrica.
“The Democrats are actively and maliciously trying to destroy America.”
Some definitely are and some are just opportunists.
But you’d be surprised how many useful idiots there are who think this is to make our country better.
And if you tell them, Our country is already the best place in the world (or used to be), they’ll come back with - “Well it can always be better, and that’s what we’re trying to do - make it even better”
“After looking closely at South Africa, its surprising how similar one-party government, corruption, welfare state, intense regulation, racial and victimhood ideology are in places like Chicago and Philadelphia compared with South AFrica.”
How does that saying go - “You can take the African out of Africa, but...”
I think you’re making a huge mistake here, in your assumption, or accepting the (leftist) premise of what “All Men Are Created Equal” means.
I can almost guarantee nobody, anywhere, at anytime, has believed or believes (for example) that people are automatically always and equally endowed with identical physical or mental abilities. That’s absurd on its face. Clearly then, that isn’t even remotely what was implied. What do you suppose they meant by this? Hint: It’s what they don’t want you to know, that is more important than what they want you to “know”. Crazy concepts like ... equality before the law, a presumption of innocence for the accused, the right to face one’s accuser in a court of law, the right to self defense, the right to be secure in one’s papers and posessions ... etc etc.
Don’t be fooled, don’t fall for their phony balogna leftist crocodile tears or let them twist words into gibberish.
Early in 1934, Long announced his "Share Our Wealth" program. Vowing to make "every man a king," he promised to soak the rich by imposing a stiff tax on inheritances over $5 million and by levying a 100 percent tax on annual incomes over $1 million.
#4. They fell for the communist lies of the ANC (African National Congress), the political front of the Soviet-guided/aided South African Communist Party (SACP) of Joe and Ruth Slovo, Tambo, Zuma, etc.
And that’s the hidden truth.
“That’s absurd on its face.”
I agree that it’s absurd to say ”all men are created equal” so why put it in there.
”Crazy concepts like ... equality before the law, a presumption of innocence for the accused, the right to face one’s accuser in a court of law, the right to self defense, the right to be secure in one’s papers and posessions”
Then, that’s what they should have said. We’d have a lot fewer problems today.
