Glenn Youngkin declines debate in Virginia governor’s race, in part over moderator Judy Woodruff

RICHMOND — Republican gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin’s campaign announced Monday that the political newcomer with ties to Virginia Beach would not debate Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe at a perennial event hosted by the state bar association, in part because of the journalist moderator.

Jeff Roe, a strategist for Youngkin, told The Associated Press the campaign felt veteran journalist Judy Woodruff would not be an impartial moderator of the Virginia Bar Association debate that had been scheduled for later this month. He said the campaign took issue with a $250 charitable donation Woodruff made over a decade ago to Clinton Foundation earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. McAuliffe is a close friend and ally of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

“We’re just not going to debate two-on-one,” Roe said.

There must be HUNDREDS of local reporters and anchors who could conduct a decent debate.

But they ALWAYS go for a Liberal national "anchor" who will ask puffball questions of the democrat while interrogating the republican.

also that's what all Repubs need to do for every debate. These thing are a joke until an unbiased moderator can preside, if that's even possible

So the simple solution, is to have one liberal anchor, and one conservative anchor… And I mean a real conservative, maybe someone from talk radio, like a Chris Stigall, Mike Gallagher, Dennis Prager, or Dan Bongino. I mean, that’s only “fair,” right? And liberals are all about “fair”…

That’s how any debate should be conducted from here out, since we always play by the left rules and put up with whatever lefty Schwantz THEY decide will moderate - maybe we should force them to play by our rules from now on.

Or we walk away and hold our OWN “debate” - our guys against an empty chair on the stage, with OUR moderators.

It’s time to stop giving in to a rigged game.

Would the Democrat debate if Sean Hannity were the moderator?

$250 charitable donation Woodruff made over a decade ago to Clinton Foundation earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

I wonder how much good the $1.36 that actually went to Haiti really did. ( I may have overestimated the amount. )

McCauliffe can’t explain away the Mississippi Green Tech scam and many other Clinton scams. The Clintons can’t afford him slipping up and airing dirty Clinton laundry. I doubt any debate will happen. Terry knows going underground is a good strategy. Pelosi hibernates before every election and Biden did too.

I say

Who even needs a moderator ?

Use a microphone with a five minute timer.

If I were a candidate, this would be my format demands.

1. Each candidate is in a separate soundproof and EM proof booth. (A sound proof Faraday Cage)
_____ 1a. The only other person there is a representative from the opposition.
______1b. The candidates cannot hear or interrupt each other.
______1c. When one is speaking the other’s microphone is turned off.
______1.d Each booth has a microphone to speak but sound is provided via a speaker. (i.e. No ear piece allowed)

2. The first 3 questions
______ 2a. Each Candidate is asked the exact same three questions. The know these questions in advance and can have practiced answered for them.
______ 2b. They have 3 minutes per answer. If they go over time the microphone is cut off.

3. The next two questions are chosen by the moderator. The candidates do not know the questions. Both candidates answer the exact same question. They have three minutes

4. The last question is provided to each candidate by the opposition.

5. No multi-part, ambiguous or leading questions. For example, “Mrs Smith, how would you respond to “x” with regard to issues, 1,2, and 3?” The proper question format would be, “Mrs. Smith, how would you respond to X?”

5. No talking head commentary between questions

Each candidate would be given a 5 minute opening and a five minute conclusion.

Each candidate is in a separate soundproof and EM proof booth.

Make the booth water tight and have it start filling at the start of their response. This would deter their desire to bloviate. Also, if they drift off-topic, increase the flow of the water.

I hear you, and I understand, but my point still remains the same; we should refuse any debates with these people unless we have one of our own moderators present on the stage along side of their’s. We know there was no impartiality with the left and their cronies, so we should not play by their rules. We insist on our own people there as well, or we walk away. That way there people can ask their gotcha questions Of our candidate, and we can ask our gotcha questions on their candidate.

Playing by their rules ensures that we fail and lose. If everyone of our candidates was like Donald Trump, who shoves it back in the lefties faces at every opportunity, it wouldn’t be an issue. But there’s only one of him, for now anyway…

I think Dennis Prager would be a FAR more balanced and fair moderator than any of the ‘straight news’ journalists who typically get the gig.

George Stephanopolous was the #1 Domestic Policy adviser in the Clinton administration and now he’s treated like an impartial journalists and is allowed to host debates without any criticism. It’s insane.

If Sean Hannity were the moderator, the debaters wouldn’t be able to get 10 words in.
