....The protests are among the most dramatic proof ever offered of the failure of a tropical dictatorship that has driven 20 percent of its people into exile. Innumerable promises for a brighter future have been made during this time by the military junta that has ruled Cuba since the days when cars had tailfins and the top songs in the US charts were Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” and Domenico Modugno’s “Volare.”
Well, surprise, surprise, the future is here, and the youngsters can clearly see that all of those promises have turned out to be lies. Now, those who were supposed to reap the benefits of decades of sacrifice, self-denial and unquestioning obedience demanded by Big Brother are out on the streets, shouting at their aging masters — and the world — that they are tired of living a lie.
But why now? A perfect storm of calamities caused this sudden eruption of fearless dissent. Lately, life in Cuba has become more unbearable than ever for just about every Cuban, except those who rule the place. The crisis is due to a long string of blunders and catastrophes.
Here are a few: the loss of revenue from Venezuela; a collapsed economy; gargantuan foreign debt; a disastrous sugar harvest; uncontrolled inflation; a plague that is intensifying rather than abating; a collapsing health system; medication, food, water and electricity shortages; long lines and empty shelves at every store; and increased repression..... Another factor: The Castro dynasty has vanished. Fidel is dead, his ashes tucked away in a monolith that looks like a prop from the “Flintstones” movie. Raúl has slunk off stage at age 90...the man left in charge — ostensibly — is Miguel Díaz-Canel, a hulking figure without an ounce of charisma who seems incapable of saying anything halfway intelligent or inspiring....

Because Fidel is dead, and his Son is Weak.
I am wondering what will happen when Kim Jung passes.
It will be interesting to see if we get a female leader, and how that works out.
The one who is weak is Diaz-Canel, that’s why they pulled Raul back in. Once Raul dies, all bets are off.
2 generations of stagnation has got to make these kids wonder why they put up with it. They have enough exposure to the world to know that It could be 1000% better if they shed the shackles of communism.
The youth are revolting.
You're telling me, they stink on ice!
Maybe they are sick of being hungry on an island that essentially a huge farm with a year-round growing season?
Providing a naval base to China would let them all live like kings!
Well, no. Only the rulers.
“... a collapsing health system;”
Could someone please ask that fat turd Michael Moore to once again explain how Cuba’s healthcare system is far superior to what we have in the US?
Quite a few American youth are revolting. Have you had to stand next to one lately?
Oh, I know!
(You beat me to it!)
California has 840 miles of so so beach. Cuba has 3500 miles of Caribbean type beach. They have oil, and as you said, a permanent growing season. They have ports. All 90 miles from Florida.
They should be -fabulously- wealthy.
“pull!”
And would be in one generation if they were a democracy.
It’s before my time to recall , but I understand Cuba had a major tourist industry before Castro came along. The potential is certainly there, to revive such business, if only Cuba was not communist.
If Socialism is so bad, would we be implementing it here?
Fidel's Grave. It does have a sort of Flintstone's look to it. Yabba Dabda Do FU.
He fell like a rock!
There was certainly a lot of inequality and corruption before Castro as well as even more so after Castro but before the leftist darling took over, Cuba had the third richest economy per capita in the western Hemisphere. Sixty two years later, it is the second poorest country per capita in the Western Hemisphere, only slightly ahead of Haiti.
Looks like they don’t want him getting out, again.
