While keeping her eyes on the aircraft," the FBI report continued, "she observed a 'red streak' moving up from the ground toward the aircraft at an approximately 45 degree angle. The 'red streak' was leaving a light gray colored smoke trail. The 'red streak' went passed [sic] the right side and above the aircraft before arcing back toward the aircraft's right wing."
"She never took her eyes off the aircraft during this time," the 302 continued. "At the instant the smoke trail ended at the aircraft's right wing, she heard a loud sharp noise which sounded like a firecracker had just exploded at her feet. She then observed a fire at the aircraft followed by one or two secondary explosions which had a deeper sound. She then observed the front of the aircraft separate from the back. She then observed burning pieces of debris falling from the aircraft."
Weeks before the FBI and the NTSB were able to piece together the break-up sequence of the aircraft, Witness 73 had nailed it. According to a later FBI 302, however, when agents went back to Witness 73 for a second interview, she admitted she had been drinking "Long Island Iced Teas" before the crash and wasn't quite sure what she had seen.
When I asked her about the drinks during our 2009 conversation, she told me, "I don't even know what a 'Long Island Ice Tea' is."
"Could it have been another drink?" I asked.
"No," she told me. "I don't drink, not at all. And there's something else you don't know, something stranger. There was no second interview. They made it all up."
"There's something you may not know." I added. "You're not the only witness they did that to."

As a former pilot, that is a question I get asked about all the time.
I’m no conspiracy theorist, but let’s be clear: Yes. I say it was. And I believe the FBI covered it up.
There are many reasons to disbelieve the official explanation of what happened to TWA 800 almost 19 years ago, on July 17, 1996, off the South Shore of Long Island. There’s hardly an airline pilot among the hundreds I know who buys the official explanation — that it was a fuel-tank explosion — offered by the National Transportation Safety Board some four years later.
Lots can go wrong with an airplane. Engines can fail; they can catch fire. Devices can malfunction. Pilots make errors.
But jets do not explode in midair.
If they do, it’s usually because they’ve been shot down or bombed. There’s little to suggest that there was a bomb onboard, but there is ample evidence that a missile of some sort detonated in the air very close to the plane and brought it down.

I certainly will never trust the FBI again. So why should I assume they and the other government agencies doing the investigation were all squeaky clean back then?
I flew into Boston that night. It was late. I turned on the TV set in my hotel room. And all the TV could do was report the flight going down. They had lots of witnesses on the beach. All channels had reporters on different beaches and the witnesses had the same story. One flare of light went up. An explosion in the sky, followed by two flaming things falling to earth. I watched as witness after witness live on the beaches all gave the same testimony to various reporters.
The next day I woke up. And the witnesses were gone. The story was different. Somehow it was an electrical malfunction. And that story continued. They had not put the plane back together at that point. They had no time for anything but the story came out. And any talk of a flare hitting the plane was explained away as an optical illusion. I did not buy it then. I am not buying it now. That plane was shot down. Some say it was friendly fire. I don’t know. But it was shot down.

What's your take on that? It seems intuitive that an aircraft that suddenly lost its nose while traveling at the usual speeds for that kind of flight would become instantly destabilized and couldn't possibly maintain a straight trajectory for any distance, even if the engines remained functional.
Lusitania was carrying British weapons contrary to reports at the time. Archaeological exploration of the remains proved it without a doubt. It’s sinking by the Germans turned US pubic opinion around so that they supported us entering WW1.

They didn't ground 777s after the Malaysian Airlines flight disappeared. Or the MD-11s after the Swissair crash in 1998. Or Airbus 300s after American Airlines Flight 587 in 2001. Or 767s after Lauda Air Flight 004 in 1991. Or Airbus 340s after the Air France Flight 447 in 2009. They ground an airplane only after they identify a cause and only if it represents a possible immediate danger to similar aircraft. Otherwise they specify a fix and set a deadline for implementing it.
Didn’t Pierre Salinger report from Paris that it was a missle strike by US ship?
