Former President George W. Bush on Wednesday criticized the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan and said civilians were being left to be "slaughtered" by the Taliban.
"I think the consequences are going to be unbelievably bad," he told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
"Afghan women and girls are going to suffer unspeakable harm. This is a mistake. ... They're just going to be left behind to be slaughtered by these very brutal people, and it breaks my heart," Mr. Bush said.

There is no military mission in Afghanistan.
W. once said he would not be the worlds policeman..
What happened to that?
Staying in Afghanistan past the end of Dubya’s first term was the mistake. Trying to “nation build” was the mistake.
God, what a disappointment he turned out to be.
Hide your women and children. W. erupts against a Democrat after 12 years!
There is no military mission in Afghanistan.
Agreed. You cannot do for people what they won’t do for themselves.
Bush is just doing some pre-emptive PR and ass-covering
With Taliban taking control, there will soon be a lot of videos and news showing beheadings, executions, and women wearing garbage bags.
His name will be coming up a lot at that point.
The good news is that his inept leadership has effectively destroyed his family name in politics for at least two generations. The evidence for this is that Jeb Bush was less popular than a child molester when he ran for President in 2016.
History would advise against invading Russia in the winter and trying to occupy Afghanistan. It’s been tried a bunch if times and never seems to work out.
We didn’t learn from Vietnam and won’t learn from this debacle.
Well, after all, he’s the guy that got Bin Laden....oh, wait...
It was a mistake GETTING IN, Boosh. I throw my shoe at you.
This bastard opens his pie hole only when his “legacy” is in question or being erased. Someone should ask him so how long exactly should troops remain in Afghanistan ? His answer will be the same as it was 20 years ago, “until the job is done”.
He got pretty full of himself. I recall when he announced to the world “I consider myself a wartime president.”
We should have left after Tora Bora
I suspect that the Afghanistan revenues of the Bush Crime Family’s are drying up. So sad.
I hope G. W. Bush kisses a chainsaw while he is out cutting brush.

"I told you."
Leaving Iraq was the misstep
The mistake was going into Afghanistan in the first place.
Oh, and believing that Islam is a religion of peace in the face of 1399 years of history disproving that dopey notion.
Sorry, Arbusto, we can’t stay in that s—hole. Forever. This is about 18 years overdue.
If we just declared war on Islam, demolished Mecca—turned it into glass, and waged war like Crusaders against the Muslims until they converted to any other religion, all this would be over.
