West Shore School District to bring students, staff back with or without masks, vaccinations

West Shore School District Superintendent Todd B. Stoltz plans on sharing a revised safety plan this week, with most COVID-19 mitigation efforts considered optional.

In a letter posted to the district website, Stoltz said the administration has been closely monitoring the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Department of Health and other regulatory agencies for updates on appropriate safety precautions for the upcoming school year.

Stoltz said he will be presenting the district’s new safety plan for approval by the Board of School Directors on Thursday.

The plan includes:

All schools will be open five days a week for in-person instruction

No staff or student requirements to wear face masks while at school

Staff or students will be required to wear a face mask while riding school transportation in alignment with a federal CDC mandate regarding public transportation.

People who want to wear face masks as a mitigation effort will be allowed to do so, but it is being considered a personal choice.

Staff and students will not be required to be vaccinated in order to work or attend the district’s schools.

The district will continue to offer full-time and blended virtual learning options through the district’s ExCEL Virtual Learning Academy.

The district is presenting the plan to secure funding that is supposed to come from the American Rescue Plan. This funding requires any school districts and local education agencies develop and make publicly available a “Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan” by July 30, Stoltz said.

“As I mentioned in my previous message, when requirements from PDE, DOH, or any other regulatory agencies change, we will revise our practices to comply with those restrictions and orders,” Stoltz said.

Stoltz encouraged families and staff to review the plan, as it relates to the expectations outlined. Families were also provided a place for feedback.

“Thank you in advance for your comments and for your ongoing patience and partnership as we have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic,” Stoltz said. “I will continue to keep you updated regarding our plans and expectations as the new school year approaches.”

Last week, the CDC said vaccinated teachers and students don’t need masks, but did not define how districts should handle non-vaccinated people.

Dallastown Area and Eastern York have followed suit.

So that is 3:15 of the School Districts in York County...I lack the time and inclination to research the remaining dozen.

Some District needs to find the 'nads to declare that their buses are not "public" transportation...and dare the feds to make the most of it!
