Road Trip: Scott Air Force Base, Illinois

ILscottafb1

Scott Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in St. Clair County, Illinois, near Belleville and O'Fallon, 17 miles east-southeast of downtown St. Louis. Scott Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entered World War I in April 1917.

It is headquarters of Air Mobility Command (AMC), and is also the headquarters of the U.S. Transportation Command, a Unified Combatant Command that coordinates transportation across all the services.

Air Mobility Command was activated June 1, 1992, with headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, and is one of 10 major Air Force commands. On Oct. 1, 2016, AMC consolidated with Military Air Command making AMC the oldest major command in the Air Force tracing its history to the establishment of the Air Corps Ferrying Command on May 29, 1941.

The 375th Air Mobility Wing (375 AMW) is a unit of the United States Air Force stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois and assigned to Eighteenth Air Force under Air Mobility Command (AMC).

The wing has four primary missions. It supports aeromedical evacuation within the United States. It provides operational support airlift for government officials. It offers direct security for U.S. community and nation. And it provides support for U.S. host units—making possible the command and control of the United States' entire military transportation effort.

ILscottafb3

The 375th Operations Group is comprised of four airlift squadrons, an air refueling squadron, an operations support squadron, an aeromedical evacuation squadron which extends over three operating locations, and a combat flight inspection Detachment.

It executes all three of Air Mobility Command's core capabilities (airlift, air refueling, and aeromedical evacuation) by providing operational support airlift with C-21A aircraft at three U.S. and one deployed location; DV special airlift missions via an association with Air Force Reserve Command's 932nd Airlift Wing; global air refueling support via an association with the Air National Guard's 126th Air Refueling Wing; and operates aeromedical evacuation systems on seven air mobility platforms for inter/intra-theater casualty movement.

Additionally, the group develops emerging technology procedures for integration into U.S. Air Force flight operations and conducts worldwide combat flight inspections on Federal Aviation Administration-owned aircraft.

Finally, the group has responsibility for C/NC-21A aircraft maintenance, operations support for deployment of combat-ready aircrews and aircraft worldwide, and all airfield operations and management, including air traffic control of the joint-use Scott AFB/Mid America Airport called home by three flying wings.

Longing for God

Bible in a Year:

Even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen.

Nehemiah 1:9

When Conner and Sarah Smith moved five miles up the road, their cat S’mores expressed his displeasure by running away. One day Sarah saw a current photo of their old farmhouse on social media. There was S’mores in the picture!

Happily, the Smiths went to retrieve him. S’mores ran away again. Guess where he went? This time, the family that had purchased their house agreed to keep S’mores too. The Smiths couldn’t stop the inevitable; S’mores would always return “home.”

Nehemiah served in a prestigious position in the king’s court in Susa, but his heart was elsewhere. He had just heard news of the sad condition of “the city where my ancestors are buried” (Nehemiah 2:3). And so he prayed, “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, . . . ‘if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name’ ” (1:8–9).

Home is where the heart is, they say. In Nehemiah’s case, longing for home was more than being tied to the land. It was communion with God that he most desired. Jerusalem was “the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.”

The dissatisfaction we sense deep down is actually a longing for God. We’re yearning to be home with Him.

Reflect & Pray

What’s your idea of home and why? In what ways do you sense yourself longing for God?

Father, help me understand that only You can satisfy my longings. Help me be at home with You, no matter where I am.

Scott, later Richards-Gebaur, (we called it Dickie Goober) also used to be the Headquarters of Air Force Communications Command (AFCC) my old command, under Major General Paul Stoney. I met him once, at Laughlin, only about 5’ 3” He genuinely had the welfare of his troops at heart, and was well liked by all of us. 👍

Hey there, radu!

How were things in your corner of the world? It’s still very pleasant here. For now.

Howdy, luvie.

Things are a little frustrating in my corner of the world tonight. As soon as I posted earlier, internet went bye-bye. It’s back at the moment but for how long remains to be seen.

It was steamy hot all day, then we had a big batch of rain come through around 7:00 this evening.

Glad things are still pleasant there for the time being. Wouldn’t it be nice if that weather would stick around for the rest of the summer? :-)

Uh-oh. Sorry you’re having internet problems. Is there bad weather somewhere around there besides just rain? I’m glad you got the rain, though. I’m sure your flowers will be, too!

I would be a happy camper if this weather lasted the rest of the summer. I have friends in CA and in other parts of the west, including PRO, and they are really suffering. I’m thankful for this respite. Not taking it for granted though.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

It seems to be behaving now. No telling what was going on with the ‘net earlier. It wasn’t the weather. We didn’t have storms - - just rain and that was already out of here.

I’m sure you WOULD be a happy camper if your current weather lasted the rest of the summer. LOL! I imagine PRO and everyone else out west would love to have some of it too. It’s been insanely hot lately.
