Former Verve rocker Richard Ashcroft has canceled his scheduled appearance at the Tramlines Festival in Sheffield, England, over its participation in a government testing program that will require attendees to have received both COVID-19 vaccinations or a negative coronavirus test in the last two days.
Richard Ashcroft announced his cancellation in an Instagram post this week, saying he won’t be performing in concerts that impose “restrictions.”
“Apologies to my fans for any disappointment but the festival was informed over 10 days ago that I wouldn’t be playing once it had become part of a government testing programme,” he wrote.
“I had informed my agent months ago I wouldn’t be playing concerts with restrictions The status of the festival was one thing when I signed up for it, but, sadly was forced to become something else.”
He also used the hashtags #theydontownme and #naturalrebel.

Verve ... Bittersweet Symphony? Good enough song. Good for Richard Ashcroft.
Good for him.
See, not all youngsters have consumed the kool-aid. Thankfully.
Thanks.
Good for him. Everyone needs to push back.
I don’t know this man.
But God Bless him.
In Entertainment and still have common sense. RARE.
I can’t quite consider a man likely crowding age 50 a youngster (though that is still younger than me), but I’m glad he took a stand. Need more to do the same.
Good song. I remember it being in a 90s movie or two. I don’t know if they are considered a “one hit wonder” or not, but that’s the only thing I remember from them.
YES!!
Yes, the only tune that I’m familiar with. I do remember a dust up with the Stones over Ashcroft sampling their work.
He was the lead singer and occasional rhythm guitarist of the alternative rock band The Verve from their formation in 1990 until their original split in 1999. Songs he wrote for the band include "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "Lucky Man", and the UK number one "The Drugs Don't Work".
Good for him.
Thanks. I’ll chk later.
I guess I’m going to listen to his music now.
