CNN — A new data analysis identifies clusters of unvaccinated people, most of them in the southern United States, that are vulnerable to surges in Covid-19 cases and could become breeding grounds for even more deadly Covid-19 variants.
The analysis by researchers at Georgetown University identified 30 clusters of counties with low vaccination rates and significant population sizes. The five most significant of those clusters are sprawled across large swaths of the southeastern United States and a smaller portion in the Midwest.
The five clusters are largely in parts of eight states, starting in the east in Georgia and stretching west to Texas and north to southern Missouri. The clusters also include parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee, and are made up of mostly smaller counties but also cities such as Montgomery, Alabama; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Amarillo, Texas.
Most of these states are currently seeing increases in Covid-19 cases.
“Parts of the country are just as vulnerable if not more vulnerable than they were in December, 2020,” said Shweta Bansal, an associate professor of biology at Georgetown University.
Those vulnerable clusters put all of the United States – and to some extent, the world – at risk for going back to 2020, since high-transmission areas can become breeding grounds for Covid-19 variants that could go on to evade Covid-19 vaccines.
“These clusters of unvaccinated people are what is standing in the way of us putting this virus down permanently,” said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a CNN medical analyst and professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington University.
Millions of unvaccinated people in the clusters About one-third of Americans have not received even a single Covid-19 shot – and the Georgetown analysis shows that these people are not evenly spread around the United States.

What is the Dashboard in this article? I see the date.
I don’t think there’s much room for legitimate concern around the effectiveness of the US vaccines. Certainly the Chinese vaccines are garbage and I’m not at all confident about the Russian vaccine at this point, but there is a mountain of evidence that the American vaccines work wonders with all known variants. 99.2% of the COVID-19 deaths in the US in May were unvaccinated people.
I do understand there being concerns around vaccine side effects. Every medicine has side effects. Tylenol has side effects, but it’s considered extremely safe. We do know of some actual side effects that are risks with these vaccines. The two mRNA vaccines have a low risk of anaphylaxis with some people. They can also cause Myocarditis in rare cases, mostly among young males. The J&J vaccine has a known risk of blood clots in girls and women of child-bearing age. All of these are very rare, but the risks do exist. It’s possible there are other very rare side effects that are yet to be identified.
It’s worth noting that when we talk about them being “rare”, we’re talking about anywhere from 1 in 90,000 to 1 in a million. And when we talk about Myocarditis, that risk is around 11 per million versus 23,000 per million with COVID-19 infection, so if Myocarditis is a concern, you’re far better off with the vaccine. But I do understand concern about possible risk of side effects.
Why are unvaccinated people such a threat if the vaccine is so effectiv
e?
I’m not getting 1. Nor wearing a mask except at Dr office for my protection. Infants and toddlers have never been a issue with getting it, and their immune systems are worse than mine is.
Hubby has 40 yrs of order following on vaccines, 20 USN, 20 Prof Jr Tech College, still getting any vaccine his doc recommends, all but Shingles. Finally stopped the Flu after watching me go through 2 weeks of H. over the Swine 1.
That's my take too. I had one Pfizer and am still debating if I want the second shot. My body - my choice.
Why isn't he getting the Shingles vac?
Apparently, from what the experts I have asked have said, the delta variant is practically a complete outlier—much worse than we first thought. Unless the Israeli health authorities come up with a better reason why the vaccinated are getting the variant more than the unvaccinated, it is probably because there are more OF the vaccinated and they are not well protected by the present vaccines.
Here, the news is that the delta is responding well to the vaccines, and people are being urged by Pfizer to get a booster shot of the vaccine now, before improvements are made to reflect the new danger. FDA and CDC are simply saying that the booster is not called for at this time.
Take your pick.
I would definitely wait for the improvements. I think.
Until someone comes up with a better reason for these results.
As he had both types measles, but his doc didn’t recommend it, strange.
I’ve had both types, 2 small shingles patches, but I’m a 4 Autoimmune Patient, with a long list of med reactions, even the doc wasn’t recommending it. Which is unusual, then I usually decline all vaccines. Doesn’t mean they don’t ask. They have learned when I say NO, it’s NO. Just try this sample, goes in trash after I read side effects.
