Didn’t we used to make stuff here? Since most of the newer drugs are developed in this country, why do we have to import stuff from Canada? Those imports should be limited to wood products, Molson, and hockey players.

Some of these are technically ‘reimportations.’ Many of these drugs are manufactured here (or in Puerto Rico) and then exported to countries like Canada. The catch is Canada - for a variety of reasons - pays SIGNFICANTLY less for the drugs than US consumers do. So, it’s quite frequently cheaper to reimport the drugs from Canada (and other countries) than it is to buy them from your local US pharmacy.

There’s a reason drug companies sued Trump when he tried the same thing and this is the reason. It undercuts the premium prices they’re charging US consumer who are, in a very real way, underwriting the socialized medicine that Canada provides to its citizens.

American drug companies export drugs to be reimported all the time. That’s where a lot of the Fentanyl comes from.
