To look at me you’d never know it, but my great-great-great-great [“4G”] grandmother was from Nigeria, according to my saliva, all that was needed for the laboratory to make that determination. It is difficult to know which of these two data points would have surprised my parents more -- how little we know of our family’s past or how much modern science can tell us. Our family history is pretty murky on both sides, due to early deaths, divorce, transiency, alcoholism, and other assorted human conditions.
There’s no shame in that, I suppose. No doubt, many American families have a cloudy lineage. Fortunately, one of the great things we achieved in the Revolution was to rid ourselves of the trappings of aristocracy. An American needn’t prove his bloodline to seize opportunity or to pursue happiness. Nor do we impute the sins of the offspring to the parent. A joke currently making the rounds illustrates the latter point: only in America can a daughter of a stripper and a drug addict call her grandpa “Mr. President.”
My brother’s reaction to the revelation that we are 1/64th sub-Saharan African was terse and profound: “I just hope it was consensual,” he texted me. Suddenly, the tender fantasy of star-crossed lovers I’d begun to imagine for my “4G” grandparents was gone with the wind. Although the laboratory cannot tell us, and our family history doesn’t record it, my “4G grandmother” was likely a slave. And logic informs us, alas, that my “4G” grandfather was probably her owner. When I saw his text, I shuddered, cringed, sighed, and only then pondered the divulgement.
Momentarily, I had regretted that I’d spat into the test tube. But why? My siblings and I, assuredly, are not responsible for our genetic link to these ancestors;

Did Bloody Lane at Antietam mean anything?
Was the generations of Americans wiped away by the Civil War not enough to make up for "muh slavery"?
Slavery is mankind’s original sin exported to the world by Africa.
Heck, look at the bright side, you'll get 1.5% of the reparations check.
Slavery is the worst possible thing to many debauched licentious people that murder their own unborn children or eagerly agree that’s proper for others to do so.
Don’t owe them 1/64th of a penny for slavery.
America has no “original sin”. The idea is preposterous and those who believe it should leave.
literally the ENTIRE WORLD ran on slavery for THOUSANDS of years before America came into existence.
85-90 years after winning independence from the worlds superpower, America fought to remove slavery from its country. It was the SECOND country to do so.
all the bs blaming America for slavery comes from the left and should be fought with facts.
The real sin has been corrupt politicians using the miracle of our country to harm and cash in.
Africa was the source but not the exporter. Negros in Africa didn't become slaves because they were black, they became slaves because they were available.
My cousin fought and was mortally wounded at the Bloody Lane and is buried at Hagerstown, MD.
Africa was the source but not the exporter. Negros in Africa didn’t become slaves because they were black, they became slaves because they were available.
*********
Until late in the thing the slaves came from two general sources.
Those conquered by other African tribes and sold.
Those bought or captured by Muslim slaver expeditions.
The slaves would then be stockpiled/stored at fortresses along the various coasts and then European outfits would come and buy in bulk.
And what the mouth-breeders and snot-gobblers always want to forget is that Europe brought the slave trade to, and developed the slave dependant economies in, the New World.
More than half a million men were wounded or killed in the struggle (likely more)
Some areas of the US STILL suffer repercussions of that fight. The fighting is over and the healing is incomplete.
1. Irresponsible media have capitalized on this for decades and gratuitously revisit pre Civil War attitudes just to ‘sell newspapers’.
2. Unscrupulous and desperate politicians reach in their back of tricks and pull THIS ONE out whenever their popularity flags.
3. US minorities have permitted themselves to become a political football because the free stuff dolled out for those supporting these politicians and media is irresistible!! You'd think that the 'information age' would take the corners off this ...but the media and NEA control what gets said and what gets the focus in US political life.
Sort of related: My brother says less than half of the blacks now in America were descended from slaves. More than half came in after slavery was abolished.
I had two great-great grandfathers in the G.A.R. One participated in the seige of Petersburg.
Lost a great-great uncle after the second battle of the Wilderness (1864), died as a POW.
My wife’s great-grandfather survived Andersonville.
We’ve paid our share.
Maybe a different Yossarian? What do I know. I have no idea.
I don’t that is true. We do know the Egyptians held the Jews for slaves until Moses led them out of Egypt. The Romans held the Greek as slaves and the old Germans, but the Germans didn’t hold slaves
Great point!
America has no original sin, individuals do. I didn’t kill my kids, others did and called it the peculiar institution, I mean abortion.
Why this lumping of antislavery individuals in the colonies with the proslavery? It’s like saying everyone’s gay when a single percent are doing the perversion. America isn’t the great satan, individuals are and they concentrate around certain cities or occupations but still, individuals stand before Jesus, not groups.
Catholics don’t molest kids, nor do priests, but evil individuals.
Everybody Why the assumption a kinfolk was raped? What racist privaledged sexism and victimistic virtue signalling !
