Ohio Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance said on Monday that he regrets posting since-deleted tweets critical of former President Trump.
“Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance told Fox News's Alicia Acuna during a Monday interview. “And I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy. I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak.”
“I think … the most important thing is not what you said five years ago, but whether you’re willing to stand up and take the heat and take the hits for actually defending the interests of the American people,” Vance said.
Vance also said in the clip shared by Mediaite that he met with Trump recently at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Vance, the author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" and venture capitalist, announced his bid on Thursday to fill retiring Ohio Sen. Rob Portman's (R) seat.
He has taken on a pro-Trump stance in recent years but contenders in the crowded GOP field had been expected to pounce on his past criticism of Trump. He has come under fire in recent days after CNN's Andrew Kaczynski posted several since-deleted tweets from Vance saying, among other things, that he would vote for Evan McMullin.
Rand Paul didn't say nice things about Trump in the primary either and it never stopped them becoming allies.
I can respect someone who can admit they were wrong. It is better than a George and Jeb Bush or Bill Krystol. All of the weak spineless fake conservatives out there.
The dude endorsed McMullin. That’s more of an indictment.......he should be rerquired to explain that
Only if Trump endorses him.
He and Trump should not join the circular firing squad.
I like Vance, but we’ll see.
There are quite a few notables who were agin Trump before they were afore him
I happened to realize his awesome potential on Day 1.....:)
I guess I have to credit him for reading the tea leaves.
I don’t mind people who are honest, who also change their minds, as long as their core values are firm.
Rand Paul has disagreed with Trump, but he’s also agreed with him many times - and he has never stabbed him in the back like so many other GOP politicians.
I can respect someone who could take back some stuff said in the past and admit they were wrong. I get that people would be critical of Trump when he first started to run, but I think he was one of the best presidents of my life time.
This guy seems to be a high risk-high reward type. Ryan(Democrat) is their best candidate and Mandel/Timken have warts on our side. Might have a good effect on collateral races.
I didn’t vote for Trump in 2016, but I sure did in 2020.
At least Paul openly admits the election was stolen. Hopefully Vance is the same. That is really the other thing that matters at this point.
Not worried about things said in 16, what have been his actions since?
Vance is a uniparty stooge if ever there was one.
Sorry.
Josh Mandel
Keep in mind Trump endorsed McCain, McConnell, Romney and Grahamnesty and now he has also endorsed Micro “Amnestio” Rubio.
Vance = Uniparty. Which means our side will be chumps for as long as Vance wants us to be chumnps, we AKWAYS fall for this. Hold the ball, Lucy!
And unlike so many Republicans, I can respect Rand Paul. I never thought I’d be able to respect Ted Cruz after 2016, but I now do. However, like another poster stated, I won’t cast a vote for ANY candidate that President Trump has NOT endorsed. And that is because I trust the man, more so than any Republican in office today.
