Several members of the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) turned away from the flag as a 98-year-old WWII veteran played the national anthem.
The incident occurred Monday, just before the USWNT took-on Mexico in their final tune-up before the Tokyo Olympics.
The veteran playing the harmonica is Pete DuPré, who has gained national notoriety playing the anthem at sporting events all over the country. The USWNT protest on Monday was not the first time U.S. athletes have snubbed the flag while qualifying for the Olympics. In late June, hammer thrower Gwen Berry also turned away from the flag during the playing of the national anthem.
Monday’s incident sparked intense backlash on Twitter.

I’ve talked to some very conservative politicians about that. The problem is NPR\PBS can call on legends of suburban women (many conservative!) who will come out of the woodwork to defend NPR\PBS. The GOP is always convinced they have a “suburban women problem” and going after NPR\PBS would make it worse. Maybe they do and going after NPR, etc will indeed make it worse? I don’t know. Too many people (Note I am including many conservatives !) see nothing wrong with having somone else fund their personal interests and hobbies. Women are the worst about that !
No medals to be awarded to them honor before activism.

The organization is doing a massive PR campaign right now to claim that the players were not disrespecting the flag or the veteran. OK, I might believe you but the history of this team with scoundrels like Megan Rapinoe give us cause to be suspicious.
BTW, Subway sandwich has lost a customer for life for using that freakshow as a pitchman. Sorry, way too many better sandwich options.

There was a time when athletes appreciated being given the privilege and HONOR of representing this country in the Olympics.
But it looks like that's over, considering the antics of these spoiled, ignorant pigs. They should be replaced immediately, today.

The correct sentence should be: "The veteran playing the harmonica is Pete DuPré, who has gained national celebrity playing the anthem at sporting events all over the country. Renown or even just attention would also be acceptable.
Where was the coach. Is he/she allowing it? If so, then he/she has to go.
I believe the man standing in front of Jesse was Luz Long, his German opponent in the long jump. The two became friends, with Luz even giving Jesse pointers on the Long Jump.
Sadly Luz died in the war.

This response is very different from a similar demonstration by the Black Panthers years ago.
The whole thing was so shocking that when the masses finally recovered they TOTALLY SUPPORTED THE team members who did that...raised their fists, etc.
I was young, but I remember thinking US reaction was nuts.
IF I watch at all, I’ll be cheering for whatever team they play. Hope they get knocked out in the first round by the worst team. That was a disgusting woke display.

I definitely see the claim that they were either facing the flag or the vet. Each was in totally different place. Lots of people don’t get what they should do these days.
Playing devil’s advocate here, though I do like truth and don’t want to use lies for our side.
