An earthquake, hurricane or tsunami won’t bring us together. Another Great Depression might, though maybe we’d need a war on top of it.

He is probably correct. The last time we had even a gesture of unity was right after 9/11. Bush had 90% approval for months even as democrats in Congress had begun to undermine.
Studies of cohesive group identity reveal consistently that when a group is divided, the best way to overcome the divide is to be confronted with an overriding, superordinate external threat. Pearl Harbor was an earlier example. Democrats and Republicans alike lined up down the street waiting to enlist.
From the end of WW II through the 80’s, with the Cold War on, there was an overarching principle of foreign relations, often violated but always honored in the breach, that “politics stopped at the water’s edge.”
With the fall of the Berlin Wall and soon the Soviet regime, that unified exoskeleton was fragmented by partisan animosities and agendas. Since then it has been all downhill.
