I was asking myself the same.
Toure also said that today, the killings of Black men and women like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery "remain hyperpresent in the Black mind." Toure suspiciously, conveniently ignores the 7,000 black people who are killed by other black people every year in the U.S. Apparently, Toure wants those 7,000 black people (each year) to be 'hyperabsent' "in the black mind" -- but why is that? Does anyone know why?
If the original poster didn't include a "Barf Alert" in the title, there wouldn't be any controversy over this at all.
Personally, I suspect she posted this article without even reading it. I'm familiar enough with her posting habits that this isn't an unlikely scenario at all.
Right!
I don’t understand. While I habitually do it, the proper name is Independence Day.
The only time a date works is “May the 4th”…be with you!
Ok, in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo (next day…is there something about that time period?).
And it was from TownHall. I don’t know why it should be a barf.
So saying “Happy October 31st” IS Ok?
Fair enough. But I suspect that if the original celebrants used a term like “Free Da Negroes Day,” there’s no way in hell that would be included in the holiday’s name today. :-P
Almost exactly. Except that might be April 19 or Sept 3.
Also, happy rebellion day, or happy revolution day?
Or January 6th.
Thank you. At least someone gets that this is stupid.
Happy 4th of July, everyone.
We declared our independence on July 4th...that’s when WE decided we were independent...We did NOT have to have Britain tell us we were independent...That was our decision and we made it....
In 1912, the President of Mexico went on a visit to Great Britain...While there, he enjoyed British dining...he had a condiment that he had never tasted before and loved it so much, he ordered 1000 cases of it for Mexico...The shipment was on it’s way to the US to be transferred to Mexico when the ship carrying it hit an iceburg and sank...The condiment was aboard the Titanic...
When the President of Mexico heard it, he was so sad he declared a national holiday...That day is known as Sinko de Mayo...
Yes, we celebrate when we declared independence, well almost anyway, as the Declaration of Independence was actually signed on July 2, 1776.
I’ve been here since 2002. Sadly, I have to agree. The place has become overrun with knee-jerk doom-and-gloomers and people that simply parrot worn-out one-liners.
Reminiscent of the debate over the secularization of Christmas and other holidays. It would be good if people were more devoted to the religious or philosophical meanings of holidays, but the meanings are going to be downplayed most of the time. They are there when people need them and it doesn’t hurt to point them out, but an awful lot of people aren’t going to listen.
Cannot argue with your logic. However, you nation still pays too much homage to that bunch in London.
Yup. Not many McDonalds around on the blocks back then.
