Department of Health Encourages Pennsylvanians to Safely Celebrate the Fourth of July Holiday

Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Health today urged Pennsylvanians to practice healthy eating habits and follow heat safety tips during the Fourth of July holiday.

“While enjoying Fourth of July festivities and food, remember to follow grilling and food safety tips,” Department of Health Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam said. “Since Pennsylvania summer weather can get very hot, it is extremely important to keep perishable foods refrigerated and not sitting out in the heat. Also, remember to properly handle raw meats to prevent foodborne germs, which can lead to food poisoning.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has tipsOpens In A New Window to keep food safe during the hot weather. If you are preparing food in advance for the Fourth of July, divide cooked foods into shallow containers and store them in the refrigerator or freezer to rapidly cool. After cooking or grilling raw meats, throw away marinades and sauces that have touched raw meat juices. Use a clean plate and utensils to remove cooked meats from the grill.

Refrigerating your food promptly will help prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying and making you sick. Always keep your refrigerator below 40 degrees and chill perishable foods within two hours. If the outdoor temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, refrigerate food within one hour. The safest way to thaw frozen food is in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave. Never thaw foods on the counter, because bacteria can grow quickly in foods that are left at room temperature.

If you are going to community events or festivals, bring hand sanitizer and disposable wipes to clean your hands. Be sure to only order food from vendors that have licenses to sell food, are wearing gloves and using appropriate utensils when serving food.

If you have a food-related illness, your doctor or the laboratory that did the testing will report it to the department. You can also call 1-877-PA-HEALTH to speak with a public health nurse. The department also encourages Pennsylvanians to practice heat safety over the Fourth of July holiday as we are coming out of a heat wave and warm weather remains in the forecast.

The combination of heat and humidity can be deadly for people and pets who are not able to keep themselves cool and exposure to high temperatures for long periods of time can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke. We ask all Pennsylvanians to be good neighbors and check on people who may have limited mobility or may not have a way to escape the heat. For more information about heat safety, please refer to an earlier press release on extreme summer heat.

Additional information on foodborne diseases and heat safety can be found on the Department of Health’s website at www.health.pa.gov

Drink plenty of beer, wine & spirits; that’ll kill all germs and bacteria.

If there is one day in the year the government should keep its trap shut - it is Independence Day.

The American Revolution was about..

…overthrowing a tyrannical government
…establishing a self-governing Republic
…assuring the State would never again grow out of control.

If the last year has proven anything, it is that the State has indeed grown out of control.

You would think on “Independence Day” of all days, the government would “read the room” and have the sense to STFU - and for just one day - refrain from telling us what we are allowed to do.
