Supply of cars likely to become restricted due to chip shortage, dealership warns

The supply of cars for sale is likely to be restricted later this year as a result of the global shortage of semiconductor chips, a leading motor dealership has warned.

Pendragon, which trades under brands including Evans Halshaw and Stratstone, is the latest to highlight how the shortage could soon filter through to consumer-facing businesses.

It adds to similar warnings from rivals Inchcape and Vertu Motors.

In a trading update - in which it highlighted strong sales in May and June - Pendragon said that "the extent of the impact of the well-publicised semi-conductor chip shortage is not yet clear".

But the group added: "It is becoming increasingly apparent there is likely to be some restriction of supply during the second-half of FY21 [full-year 2021], with vehicle order times already being extended."

Pendragon also highlighted supply constraints and pent-up demand in the used car market.

Car makers across the world from Jaguar Land Rover to Ford have been grappling with a lack of supply of semiconductor chips for months, prompting temporary shutdowns and reduced output.

Let's go back to the chipless engines we used to be able to repair, take apart, rebuild, and put back together while AC/DC or Run-DMC blared from the speakers.

I call bullshit on this. There maybe a shortage of cars people want to buy, but there is no shortage of cars for sale in my area.

already seeing it on the lots in NE Ohio - almost vacant across the spectrum of dealers with just a few items left. Irked me because I’ve been trying to get my wife to decide what she wants for the last year and she kept hemming and hawing ...so not she can’t get anything.

There are cars for sale, but the used car prices are up something like 50%...

Supplies are kind of short in southern Arizona. At least among trucks. And prices? WAY up. In fact, USED truck prices are up around 60-70%. In part because new truck prices are up and a lot of us don’t trust double turbo-charged 6 cylinders like we do a big V-8.

And they got less than 15mpg while producing less than 200hp. They also spewed huge clouds of unburnt gas.

How about no.

Also, we can repair, take apart, rebuild, and put back together modern computer controlled engines just fine.

Use it as an object lesson for your wife to not be indecisive.

I’m tired of freaking computers everywhere. The washing machine, car, gas pump, everything has an agenda.

Might be overhyped, but there has been reduced availability of certain cars already. My lady was looking for a Spark a couple months ago, and there was only one in the entire region. Dealers stated it was because of chip scarcity.

Yeah, the washing machine... A ringer would almost be better.

Wonder if Lehman’s has them.

There’s a shortage of cars you’d likely be interested in buying.

If you’re loaded, or are happy to take out a 7 year car loan to buy an overpriced, loaded trim, no problemo.

If you have and know how to use the expensive diagnostic equipment needed to identify what you need to fix and put back together.

How ‘bout we bring back all manufacturing to the USA? Make it here! Do it now!

You can blame FREE TRAITORS™ for this.

Also blame the government for making production difficult to impossible in many cases.

That’s why I decided to put too much money into keeping the old beater Nissan Sentra running for a few more years. It’s my own fault for not buying something last year.

The expensive diagnostic gear that can cost less than $100? You can get most information you need with an $30 ELM327 interface and a smartphone app. Data logging, realtime parameter display, everything.
