Is DeSantis the new Reagan?
The Hill ^ | 06/26/2021 | DOUGLAS MACKINNON

During a recent panel discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski — who appear to have a solid understanding of politics — seemed genuinely surprised by the results of the Western Conservative Summit straw poll in which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis not only topped the potential 2024 Republican presidential field but easily beat former President Trump.

Quoting an attendee who had just heard DeSantis speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Kissimmee, Fla., Scarborough — a former Republican congressman from Florida — remarked, “But then this one person said, ‘But, my God, you should have seen the response for Ron DeSantis. He was like a conquering king.’ And this person, who’s been in Republican politics for 40, 45 years, said, ‘I haven’t seen anything like it since Reagan in ’80. He was unbelievable.”

I’d vote for DeSantis in the general. I’d vote for Trump in the general. May the best of these best men win.

“Reagan was Reagan and Trump was Trump and DeSantis is DeSantis. All different styles.”

Different styles, different backgrounds.

Reagan was the hard-core anti-communist.

Reagan believed in America and American workers unlike most of today’s Bushie GOP globalists sell outs.

The big advantage I see in DeSantis is that he already runs a political executive office, and would bring much of his staff with him. I loved Trump’s stances on nearly everything, but his staff picks were atrocious at best. (Only a few performed their jobs - most were enemies.)

Trump or bust. Don’t really care much for politicians who say what you want to hear. DeSantis is a politician going after a constituency while Trump was by and large just being himself.

I fear Trump may be too old in 2024–I think that he would be the oldest person ever elected to the presidency. It would not be any surprise if Trump endorsed DeSantis.

Bingo. If you’re on your 4th Chief of Staff in as many years, you’re going to have problems. As a DC outsider, Reagan enjoyed the luxury of bringing his ‘Western White House’ with him to DC which made his life somewhat easier.

DeSantis is fine but if he ‘easily beat Trump’ in a poll, it’s a BS poll. Plain and simple. Who are the “Western Conservatives”? Some RINO group ?

I agree. President Trump surrounded himself with traitors and fools. Yet in spite of this and with tremendous opposition from Congress and our enemies in the press, he was truly able to Make America Great Again.

Here’s the truth:

“DeSantis led the vote with 74.1% to Trump’s roughly 71.4% in the highly unscientific poll, which was conducted online using the approval voting method.”

Straw polls mean nothing at this point, since no one knows President Trump’s true intentions.

Does he really want to return to the DC swamp to live out his golden years among the most vile human beings ever assembled?

Or are his hints at a 2024 race designed to keep his MAGA movement strong and to make his endorsements more relevant?

If a Trump supporter doubts whether he will run, which many of us do, would that not affect the way he would answer a straw poll?

I would say that no matter how popular DeSantis may be among Trump supporters, hardly any of us would not prefer President Trump himself.

And that is no slight against DeSantis.

Wouldn’t returning President Trump to the White House be the ultimate vindication? Wouldn’t it be the only way to heal the wounds of 2020?

If fact, if there is ANY true Trump supporter out there who would rather have DeSantis in 2024 than Trump himself, I’d like to ask him a few questions:

First question: “Would you be willing to submit to a lie detector test?”
