A National Institutes of Health study has found that using marijuana might increase the risk of suicidal ideation and attempts to self harm, even among those with no history of depression.
The study, titled "Associations of Suicidality Trends With Cannabis Use as a Function of Sex and Depression Status," was published in the journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday. It involved face-to-face household interviews as part of the 2008-2019 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health conducted by researchers with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The National Institute on Drug Abuse sponsored the research as part of the NIH.
What the researchers found was that men who used marijuana daily and suffered from depression had an increase in suicidal ideation from 14.9% (2008-2009) to 21.9% (2018-2019), and 10.3% (2008-2009) to 17% (2018-2019), among non-daily users.
According to the findings, women who used marijuana also appeared to have a greater associated risk of suicidal ideation than men who used marijuana.

Yeah, you can start sitting around the house getting stoned all day because you are depressed and sitting around the house getting stoned all day will make you depressed.
Strange that a report would claim such a thing. I’ve been smoking pot for nearly 45 years - (at first for recreation, now for the ability to sleep, a natural weed is far better than chemicals made by man) - and I’ve never entertained the thought of suicide. This sounds like a report on about the same level as the 1950’s anti-marijuana propaganda movies.
Smoking pot has never made me depressed. But I’ve been depressed at times and smoked pot, and life didn’t seem so depressing anymore.
Of course what is depressing is people like you who paint with such a broad brush, thanks, now I have a reason to roll one up and toke like crazy.
Happy Sunday to everyone, its going to be a great day.
A study funded by the makers of Prozac.
I’m avoiding 3 expensive pharmaceuticals by legally infusing medical marijuana into olive oil. My post-cancer treatment left me with a few chronic issues that MJ treats very well.
“A study funded by the makers of Prozac.”
Would not be surprised.
But, I do recall (from long ago) pot making many of us paranoid. Jus sayin’, man.
Marijuana is poison.
[brace yourself for a self-serving raft of comments from the stoners and dealers disparaging this article and me as shills for “bIG PHaRmA” in 3…2…1…].
There’s also a vicious cycle at work. You sit around the house getting stoned as an escape from your problems. But this in turn only increases your problems, which ends up making you even more depressed.
You nailed it! LOL!
These worthless losers who waste their lives away like a slug have got nothing better to do.
There’s a reason it’s been criminalized for so long.
You ought to concede that just how the human brain functions is simply not known. What is known is that it is 90% phospholipids and just how those fats churn up there detemine our higher intellectual functions, moods and behavior. Virtually any substance that crosses the blood brain barrier can and often does affect those functions. Genetics detemine just how a given individual will react. People who use marijauna regularly ( and usually advocate its use in others) are not what a scientist would call a non vested, objective observer. Your claim that you have “benefitted” from habitual marijuana use would require an objective analysis. There are many who have oberved and experienced clear harm, both overt and subtle, from this drug and others.
Makes me sleep like a baby so I do it at night. Hardly any more though.
Paranoi can happen with some people. The 2 strains of indica and sativa can affect people differently.
You may feel differently if you ever have to go through months of chemotherapy.

I don’t care what you do.
Well, there we go again. Another study by the discredited NIH. And article states it ‘might’ increase, missing in the title.
More fakery from our NIH!
