Nine children were among 10 people killed in a horrific Alabama interstate crash on Saturday that involved 18 vehicles, including two tractor-trailer rigs and a bus from a home for abused, neglected and abandoned girls, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 65 in Butler County, Alabama, and was described to ABC News by Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond as a "domino effect" crash.

Bond said the episode unfolded when two 18-wheelers crashed and sandwiched a bus from the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch between them. He said an SUV that held the other two deceased victims, a father and daughter, crashed nearby.

Wayne Garlock, the Butler County coroner, said one of the vehicles that set off the chain-reaction crash is believed to have hydroplaned on the wet pavement. The crash came as Tropical Storm Claudette drenched much of the Southeast. Bond said there had been no downpours at the time of the crash and that he could not confirm that the accident was prompted by a hydroplaning vehicle.

Trucking is another industry that’s been destroyed by government experts.

That and the business degree fools who push "Just In Time".

Truckers are under enormous pressure to get stuff delivered "just in time", while at the same time the government toadies reduced the hours they can drive.

I had drivers from the south that I couldn’t understand. I don’t have the time or energy to even try.

JIT sounds great on paper but I’ve never been a fan.

Dittto on lean manufacturing. I got a dose of anorexic and I wound up in the ER twice partly being worked past breaking point.

When I pass a truck, I usually make sure I can see the windshield before I pull back in front of it. I want to make sure he can see ME!

I’ve had a semi intentionally run me off the road for no reason. Which resulted in a violent multi rollover. I don’t trust any of them. There was no traffic (so no observers or witnesses) and of course he just rolled on.

Part of Driver's Training should be a morning or afternoon as a passenger in a dump truck hauling full loads of material.

That'll get your mind right.

I have heard of cases where the bunks on the logging truck broke and the logs rolled down on a car, killing the driver. I’m also someone who tries especially hard to stay far away from logging trucks.

I have had involvement lately with rude/dangerous truckers. Last week got promptly in the slower vehicle lane as I started up hill of a good half-mile. Trucker insistent on passing as my lane merged back to a single lane. We were neck and neck as my lane disappeared, forcing me to gravel shoulder. Could have been ugly. Not the first instance of dangerous trucker moves—it does seem to be more problematic than past.

Generally do my best to avoid the freighters but most drivers do operate safely.

I retired last April with zero CSA points. Will probably help my former boss during harvest this fall.

But the inconsiderate drivers are a HUGE problem. Lurker, was there any chance that one or two cars changed lanes over into the trucker’s lane at the last moment, robbing him of critical stopping distance?

I can’t begin to estimate the times 4 wheelers have abruptly moved over and taken away my needed stopping distance. The idiots think big trucks are just as nimble and easy to stop.

And then there are the ‘setups’: people trying to get rearended for a nice payday. I’ve seen it happen. And a friend of mine showed me a pic that he took of a rear plastic bumper cover that he tapped on a two lane street in Birmingham about 17 yrs ago (back in them days truckers kept a camera in the glove box just in case). The lady hit the brakes to turn left (no signal), but had to wait for oncoming traffic. My friend didn’t think that he hit her car, but there was a slight imprint of one of his hexhead bumper bolts in the paint on the plastic bumper. His boss settled out of court for around 11k iirc.

Dash cams in trucks are helping to exonerate the trucker sometimes.

And yes, there are drivers that should never get a CDL.

I drove right by the sight of the accident. It has been cleaned up but you could still smell the smoke from the fire.

Such a tragic accident.

I can’t stand it when some little car decides to pass a semi and then slows down and drives next to it for miles.

Just pass it already and if you’re that afraid of it, then don’t try passing it in the first place.

I pass them as soon as practical.
Most truckers these days are uncourteous, aggressive, and horrible drivers.
That goes for F-150 drivers too.

Back in the 90s, me and a friend in Rock Hill,SC saw a Guaranteed Overnight Delivery semi going down the main drag.

I figured it took a fair amount of faith to drive that rig. It had the initials G.O.D.. on the trailer.

Never saw that on Claude Akins show.

I am getting my CDL soon. I am the truck driver that is wanted on the road. There are bad drivers no matter the license. There are road circumstances that are simply “accidents” “legally” even when the driver(s) caused a vehicular murder.

It is my opinion - based upon driving in different states roads, back roads, and interstates since 1974 and listening to truckers on CB - that you truck drivers are the second most incompentent - and ignorant bordering on stupidity - drivers on the road. Cab drivers are the first.

Last few trips I took on the interstate, the 18 wheelers were totally abusive.

These S.O.B.'s ought to be prosecuted for manslaughter.

If not man then there ought to be charges for careless disregard.

Truck drivers, like mailmen, have gone from the best of the best to the very worst in my lifetime.
