Want to stop governing in order to stop a bill? In Texas, that’ll stop you from getting paid.
On Friday, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed funding for the Texas Legislature after the state House Democratic caucus walked out to avoid a vote on an election integrity bill late last month. The move, first reported by the Texas Tribune, would pause all funding for the legislature, its staffers and its agencies.
Abbott said in a statement that “funding should not be provided for those who quit their job early, leaving their state with unfinished business and exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session.”
“I therefore object to and disapprove of these appropriations.”
And that’s the thing — while the Democrats’ walkout may have temporarily stalled the bill, which would have ended 24-hour drive-in voting and temporary outdoor polling places, inter alia, it’ll be added to a special legislative session later this year, along with bail reform legislation championed by Abbott and the GOP.

Explain. There are many waiting to hear about this.
As an infantry vet, I never even looked at that. Sometimes a funny comment is just meant to be funny. There’s always someone who will be offended.
I’m confident they weren’t trying to disrespect Jim or anyone else.
There wasn’t anything offensive in that comment.
No work, no pay. Sounds reasonable to me.
Abbot is a good Governor. Our little weasel is Cornyn.
Good.
Aka pissed me off royally when he caved like a wet tissue to the sky is falling crowd and shut our state down and destroying thousands of business's and livelihoods in the process last spring. He's still operating at a deficit with me for that cowardly costly stunt. Let's see if he draws a worthy primary opponent.
Wow, Just wow!!!
I am a 22 year retired veteran; 1 deployment to Iraq and 3 deployments to AFG.
I used to joke with my five children that the worst day of their lives would be if I lost my legs and had to get a wheelchair.
Cause I would be rolling and their toes would be in danger.
You really need to get a sense of humor because adults take everything in stride. I wasn’t going to let my fear or possible repercussions stop me from having a life.
Yup!
That’s the thing, Mr. Golden.
Abbott did what needed to be done.
And the only reason he's doing it now is because his polling numbers took some big hits when he shut down the state and caused so much pain and suffering to his core constituency. If it weren't for that we wouldn't have these new gun reform laws now IMHO. He's just trying to pull his fat bacon azz out of the fire he landed in and salvage his next run.
Are we really now that woke?
I’m confident they weren’t trying to disrespect Jim or anyone else.
I agree. As a 100% disabled combat veteran who has had to use a wheelchair off and on through my life since combat I wasn't the least bit offended. Cheers, and be happy! You can't please everyone all the time I've learned.
That’s the same tactic Dems used against Wisconsin Gov Walker and the Act 10 anti-teachers union bill. Didn’t work then and even backfired
Or maybe because the 2022 election is only a year and a half away.
Ding, Ding, Ding.
Ringing the bell of correctness so hard it is making it sound like the slots on a casino floor.
For which, if I'm reading this correctly, none of the legislators or their staff will be paid for.
“Much ado about nothing”.
Bingo.
