The US military said the drills were carried out in order to improve the interoperability of the alliance’s forces with their African partners. However, American media reports suggested earlier that the Pentagon is mulling sending special forces trainers to at least one African state to help fight terrorists.
Joint exercises between NATO and countries in northern and western Africa that took place over the past two weeks have now come to an end. The military drill, called "African Lion", saw 7,000 troops from the African states of Morocco, Tunisia, and Senegal, as well as from several NATO countries – the US, UK, Italy, and the Netherlands – train on interoperability.
Upon the drills' completion on 18 June, the commander of the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, Andrew Rohling, praised the exercise as "exceptional".
"It has helped our interoperability, our joint capabilities, and provided readiness and a good opportunity to build cohesion across the forces", Rohling said.
Last year, NATO abandoned the idea of holding the African Lion games due to the pandemic. However, this year the US, which led the drills, decided to devote them to operating amid the complicated conditions of the pandemic. Head of US Africa Command, General Stephen Townsend, stressed that the pandemic did not impact NATO's readiness to engage with its partners in Africa.

The only thing worse than sending soldiers to the Middle East is sending them to the Heart of Darkness.
Quick!
Somebody name a US interest in Africa!
Who won, US or the Muslims?
Interestingly, I searched “US, NATO Conclude Drills in Africa” and found only two reports: Sputnik, and the Independent (UK).
Somebody name a US interest in Africa!
Easy-women and their diamonds.
Since we are no longer energy independent, oil.
The list is extensive, but mentioning two can respond to the sarcastic comment with double information: resources, such as rare earth minerals, and strategic interest, reflected in over 25 military bases on the continent. What should be recognized as an interest is thwarting China’s military, economic and population expansion into Africa, but whether or not that is recognized as an interest depends upon whether or not one wants China to establish indomitable rule over the world for the next 2,000 years.

It's always about the oil.
This is why NATO should be abandoned. North Atlantic is nowhere near Africa.
Send them all the machetes and Remington 870s they want. Done...
“What should be recognized as an interest is thwarting China’s military, economic and population expansion into Africa, but whether or not that is recognized as an interest depends upon whether or not one wants China to establish indomitable rule over the world for the next 2,000 years.”
I suggest our interests are best served by the following:
1. Institutional rest for the US Armed Forces
2. Equipment maintenance and replacement
3. Weapons development, procurement and integration
4. Training with the new stuff
That takes money away from scores of piddling deployments and converts the US Military back to great power rivalry, if not near/mid-term war with technical forces.
Let China work the meat grinder circuit for 5-10 years, then take a look around and see which way the wind blows.
As opposed to the great Washington’s warning prophecy of entanglements,America now has “interests” all over the world.
No intention here of supporting any or all particular deployments to date. The appropriate response to Chinese expansion is a bigger topic.
But be assured that the attitude of expansion into Africa is a “meat grinder circuit” ignores staggering progress China has made in terms of development and moving in its people to Africa in just two decades. China is not getting mired in this work like the Indians, Arabs and Europeans of prior centuries, with prior centuries’ technology and colonization methods. Burying one’s head in the sands of false assumptions is a mistake not to make.
“9.6% of world output”
The US produces 20mil bbl daily. We have the ability to ramp up to 30mil and sustain it for 40yrs.
US interests are best served by staying out of that rat hole.
And rebuilding our forces.
“China is not getting mired in this work like the Indians, Arabs and Europeans of prior centuries, with prior centuries’ technology and colonization methods. Burying one’s head in the sands of false assumptions is a mistake not to make.”
What do you suggest is different about China and this new attempt to develop Africa? You mentioned technology, how does that make it different?
“As opposed to the great Washington’s warning prophecy of entanglements,America now has “interests” all over the world.”
Only 12 years after George Washington’s death, the US was in an “entanglement”.
