Young NYC homeless people to get $1,250 each month in city-backed study
New York Post ^ | June 18, 2021 | Lee Brown and Nolan Hicks

Young homeless people in the Big Apple will soon be getting $1,250 in no-strings-attached cash each month — in a $2.5 million city-backed experiment to see if they use it to get off the streets and try to get jobs.

The “Trust Youth Initiative” — partially funded by the city — will start with up to 40 homeless people ages 18 to 24, “especially Black, Indigenous, Latinx and LGBTQ youth,” the organizers said in a release.

They will get the monthly cash for up to two years, with no limits on how they spend it — and larger up-front payments available to get into housing.

A “rigorous evaluation” will then “compare the outcomes and experiences” of the target group with others getting smaller stipends and regular homeless services, such as access to shelters, City Hall said.

“The project’s flexible approach aims to improve young people’s stable housing and well-being by providing the means to afford the types of housing they choose and the supports to make investments in their own goals, education, and career development,” City Hall said in a release.

The project — which will open to “significantly more youth” in later phases — will cost $2.5 million, with $200,000 from the city and another $300,000 raised through the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which is chaired by first lady Chirlane McCray. The rest will come from private donations from various trusts and foundations.

Hizzoner insisted the cash “will help uplift young people and reinforces our commitment to ending youth homelessness once and for all.”

“A Recovery for All of Us requires embracing innovating solutions to our most pressing challenges,” he insisted in a statement.

Why stay at home and work at an entry level job to support your family when you can declare yourself homeless and get $1250 a month? I wouldn't give my children such money with no strings attached when they become adults.

It is discrimination to target "Black, Indigenous, Latinx and LGBTQ youth" for aid, but I don't think this aid will help them in the long run.

I don’t get it. $1250 a month to help get them off the streets?

How many homeless are on the streets because they simply don’t have enough money to find a place to live?

And how far does $1250 go in an expensive place such as NYC?

Well, it is a great incentive for cities all over the country to buy their local derelicts one-way bus tickets to NYC with instructions on how to apply when they get there.

Bob Dylan's songwriting career took off when he stayed New York and exchanged his entertaining skills (and occasional waiter and cleaning help) for a place to sleep in those SoHo venues.

This will turn out to be a subsidy for drug dealers.

Why not just give me ten percent of the money and I’ll tell you the results without all the bother?

The number one cause of homelessness is drug addiction. Alcohol is correctly included. What do you think a drug addict is going to do with twelve fifty a month from a handout? Radical leftists communists are now going to cause inflation in the dope world. Another stellar democrat stunt that will only cause death. Yet again, human death is not a problem for leftists.

Hmmmm, let's see. Buy myself new clothes, get myself cleaned up, polish my resume, or buy dope. Choices, choices.
