Former Vice President Mike Pence has his work cut out for him when it comes to fusing former President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement with a more traditional brand of conservatism.
“I think that is a really tough spot for him to be in,” Craig Robinson, an Iowa-based GOP strategist, said before Mr. Pence visited Florida. “You already see some of the most fervent activists don’t want anything to do with him - almost like he is a traitor.”
“So you are going to have that drumbeat, and on the other hand he is going to be competing with newer fresher people,” he said of Mr. Pence and the rest of the field of possible 2024 GOP presidential contenders.
The massive challenge in front of him was on display Friday at the Faith and Freedom Coalition “Road to Majority” conference in Orlando where his introductory remarks were interrupted by shouts of “traitor!” from a small group of hecklers.
It has been clear that some diehard Trump supporters have yet to forgive Mr. Pence for refusing to take the unprecedented step as a vice president of refusing to allow Congress to certify the Electoral College vote in favor of President Biden - an authority that most constitutional scholars say he did not possess.

Pence might consider retiring on his seven-figure book deal.
Great news! May he fall flat on his face...
Mike’s photo appears in the dictionary next to the word “pariah”
PENCE...
Patriots don’t like you anymore.
What are Pence’s negatives (among leftists and among conservatives, and these lists won’t have much common area)?
What are Pence’s positives (and how many of the leftists’ negatives list are on conservatives’ positives list, and are there ANY things on the conservatives’ negatives list that leftists would think are positives)?
What are Pence’s big “accomplishments”
I don’t see any motivated base of substantial size to bring him to the White House in 2024.
“”authority that most constitutional scholars say he did not possess””
But that’s what we have a Supreme Court for.
He should have made the ‘questionable’ call then let the judicial system have a go at it -— in their usual slow deliberative time.
That “more traditional brand of conservatism” we know is Bush League Republicanism, which is the opposite of MAGA.
Assisting the Democrats to Make America North Mexico is the goal of Bush League Republicanism.
“my turn” isn’t reason enough to be made the nominee
Quisling Pence!
I never liked him. I was disappointed that Trump picked him and was always suspicious he was the cause of some of the leaks and bad appointments.
He was part of the Hastert, Boehner, Ryan, Cantor, McCarthy House GOP team.
Only those committed to turning the USA into North Mexico get into leadership.
He was the Bush League insurance policy.
I’ll forgive, but I won’t forget and I certainly won’t vote for Pence. I have no interest in voting for career politicians running for president.
There’s no future for Pence, though he did ‘almost’ the best he could.
Appreciate his efforts to get the Republican “donor class” to compromise with the Republican base.
Would you consider DeSantis a carier career politician?
Agree. Great post. Always thought same.
PENCE also recommended Fauci and Mrs. ‘Scarf” to head up the Covid-19 Team.
Pretty sure those cartoons are verboten here.
Pence said he didn’t blame Trump for 1/6, but that “we’ll never see eye to eye” garbage says otherwise. The base will never forgive Pence for that.
