Beijing (AFP) - A handful of damaged fuel rods is behind a build-up of radioactive gases at a nuclear power station in southern China, authorities said Wednesday, describing the problem as "common" with no need for concern.
There has been an increase in radioactivity in one of the plant's two nuclear power units due to five damaged fuel rods, said a joint statement by China's environment ministry and the National Nuclear Safety Administration.
"Due to the influence of uncontrollable factors in fuel manufacturing, transportation, loading and other links, a small amount of fuel rod damage is inevitable," said the statement, calling it a "common phenomenon".
There are more than 60,000 fuel rods in the core unit, the statement said, and the proportion of damaged rods is "less than 0.01 percent".
The ministry said that the increase in radioactivity is "within the permitted range of stable operation" for nuclear power plants, and "there is no issue of radioactive leakage to the environment".

Someone on FR used to post that we in the US should stop carping about nuke power plant safety because China lost containment on one of it’s reactors and nuclear fuel was being extruded out the front door.
I remember thinking the bar had been set too low....
0.01 percent, or about the same as COVID-19. Nothing to see here, Move along. (2 mask policy for areas effected.)
Not great, not terrible.
I hope they're wearing gloves.
I wonder what folks in Hong Kong think about this...
China says ‘no abnormality’ in radiation levels around nuclear plant near Hong Kong
Hope that's true...
I thought it was caused by someone sleeping with a bat again.
Think Chernobyl. And, after that think “Communist Re-assurances”.
FWIW, I don’t think the plant’s proximity to Hong Kong is a coinkydink...
Nothing a little social distancing won’t solve.
My guess is somebody spilled their Pepsi onto the control panel. Where is Garrett Morris when you really need him?
300,000 Chinese casualties is NOTHING to a CCP responsible for 100x as many Chinese deaths.
As you cite: In CCP-speak, the statistic is meaningless.
Nuclear experts have generally played down the risks. CNN cited U.S. officials as saying that the dangers to the public were currently minimal.
Seems as though we heard the same rhetoric at the begining of a recent pandemic.
That’s what they get for buying cheap Chinese fuel rods.
China will send people in to retrieve the damage radioactive rods and dispose of them. They will not be told they are radioactive and they too will be disposed of.
Anyone know what the heck... "However, EdF has reported the presence of "rare garments" in the primary circuit of the first reactor." ...that means?
Sorry about the foreign language link, but none of the English language enemedia outlets are doing any reporting.
