World leaders say no to deadline on burning coal for energy, as global demand increases

The Group of Seven pledged to cut global greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.

World leaders at the G7 Summit this past week agreed to cut in half greenhouse gas emissions 2030 and by next year stop the funding of some coal production overseas. However, they declined to agree on a deadline for using coal as electricity to slow climate change.

The G7 nations, which collectively produce about a quarter of the world’s climate pollution, also declined to pledge significant new funding to help developing countries manage the impact of climate change and move away from burning oil, gas and coal, according to The New York Times.

The coal projects that they stop funding are those that lacked technology to capture and store carbon-dioxide emissions.

Energy experts say the G7 nations' failure to agree on a specific end date for the use of coal will weakened their ability to pressure China to curtail its growing use of coal, the newspaper also reports. Meanwhile the demand for coal is expected to increase by 4.5% this year, according to the International Energy Agency.

"Today, President Biden and fellow G7 Leaders agreed to a set of concrete actions to accelerate the global transition away from coal generation as part of our efforts to combat the climate crisis," the White House statement said in a statement Saturday. "G7 Leaders will commit to an end to new direct government support for unabated international thermal coal power generation by the end of this year."

The United Kingdom and some other European countries, not the United States, pushed aggressively during this year's summit to stop burning coal for electricity by a specific date in the 2030s, the Times also reports.

Slow climate change = Choke off prosperity

These are people who never do without, telling everyone else what they can’t have.

What a bunch of dummies. They should have just picked some year that was nonsensically far away. That would make the Greenies happy while at the same time mean nothing,

And, hey. These leaders lie to us all the time. So what’s one more lie?

The needs of an industrial civilization can be met only by using petroleum products, coal, natural gas, or nuclear. Solar/wind just won’t be enough.

Perhaps what the left really wants to eliminate is our industrial civilization.

“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”

I'm trying to parse this. So they agreed to cut half of greenhouse gas emissions in the next 9 years. Don't they do this all the time and the date gets pushed out further? Then they agree to stop the funding of some coal production overseas. Boy, that's a loaded one. "Some", that mean not all. And since when did governments fund coal production? Doesn't private enterprise exist in Europe? But, it is overseas, so it is not in Europe. I really don't care how European nations spend their tax dollars, but why are they funding coal production overseas?

I am getting the idea that my questions are hideously stupid, because these so-called world leaders don't mean a damn thing they say. They just make crap up and throw it out there to see if it sticks. Meanwhile they laugh at Xiden and Xiden is so clueless that he laughs along not knowing they are making fun of him. Imagine that, idiots making fun of a bigger idiot.

Please don't get the idea I am some greenie. I love burning stuff, especially coal. Nothing like some good old PA anthracite burning in the stove. It has a distinctive odor that brings back fond memories of yesteryear.

Let me know when the G7 leaders travel to their summit via sailing ships, then I’ll believe what they say. Otherwise it’s just a virtue-signalling fest.

"...What a bunch of dummies. They should have just picked some year that was nonsensically far away. That would make the Greenies happy while at the same time mean nothing..."

I would be happier if they did that, but their modus operandi seems to be to make it an un-achievable, pie in the sky, date (such as 12 years before Global Warming does us all in) then they ratchet up the noise and panic trying to throw the sheep into a frenzy, and when that time passes, no goals have been met, and the world didn't end, they simply pretend like nobody said it in the first place, set new unrealistic and stupid goals with an unachievable deadline, ratchet up the hysteria, and start all over again.

And when you say to them "Hey! You said the world was going to be over last year, humans would be eating each other while the water rises around our necks!" and they look deadpan at you and say "No we didn't."

Not even blinking an eye.

And the Media pretends it never happened and even stealth edit their online articles, knowing nobody is ever going to look at a real newspaper. Google alters the search engine to put their pronouncements 15 pages back on searches, and YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitter simply alter their files.

China said they will increase coal use until about 2030 then start to reverse.

Don’t bother parsing. It’s all posturing, means nothing. Just some green scraps for domestic consumption.

I interpret their pronouncements to mean they'll focus on coal's emissions

They'll use it. They may produce it, just not encourage some overseas production.

It's all gobblygook.

With an apparent inexorable slide towards electric cars and phones, etc. these peeps should take Bill Gates advice: nuclear. And damn fast.
