DC Mayor Is Unwilling To Answer Congressional Letter on Prison Conditions for Jan. 6 Protesters Held Illegally by their Country

The U.S. House Oversight is threatening to investigate the condition of prisons in D.C. where prisoners, including those held since January 6 for Capitol Hill offenses, are being held in solitary confinement, claiming Bowser is not ready for DC Statehood until she complies with their requests.

U.S. Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the Republican leader of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, sent Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser a letter in April, requesting information about Bowser’s established draconian conditions in D.C. jails keeping prisoners under her jurisdiction in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day. Further, Bowser’s refusal to answer to the U.S. House impacts her pursuit of Statehood for D.C. According to one local activist who has studied the situation, she has even made the situation worse because of the investigation.

Perhaps it's time to go beyond a letter, and members of Congress should visit the jail, with recording devices, and get testimony from those being held.

I would be most curious if the stories about some being beaten are true.

DC should not be a state. If Trump ever gets back in office I think they should devolve the city of DC back to the state it was part of before becoming the capital. Just keep the part where the main historical buildings on Federal property under the Park Service and don’t let anyone live there except the occupants of the White House. Even talking about Bowser not being ready for statehood is accepting it as a possibility. There is no reason at all for it to be a state. It’s just a city.

Denying the protestors fair trials, and putting them in solitary confinement, is third-world justice. It is obscene.

What I really love is how there are two sets of rules. The left can do whatever they want with no consequences. Wasn’t obamas attorney general in contempt of congress? Did he suffer any consequence? If we ever get a court ruling in our favor the left says, “it’s a mistake to be corrected” , when they get a court ruling it’s “revealed truth” carved in stone forever.

Seriously, even if we were charging them all with trespassing and disorderly conduct, the trials should have been over by now. Certainly if they were Democrats they all would have made bail the next day.

Of course D.C. shouldn’t be a state. But devolving nearly all of the District back to MD (could MD be forced to accept it?) runs afoul of the 23rd Amendment, which grants 3 Electoral Votes to the district which comprises the nation’s Capital. This would give the President and his family 3 EVs. To get around this, the 23rd would have to be repealed.
