Jeopardy!' contestants displayed their ignorance of US History and viewers were upset: 'Worst showing ever.'

Viewers and fans of the popular "Jeopardy!" quiz show were dismayed when none of the contestants were able to answer the clue based on very elementary knowledge of U.S. History.

The show aired Tuesday and was being hosted by "Big Bang Theory" actress and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik.

During a round of Double Jeopardy, contestant Robin Lozano chose the "Quotations" category for $800. Bialik gave him the clue from a very famous speech.

"'Government of the people, by the people, for the people' is from the end of this brief but powerful speech," she said.

The seconds ticked away before the buzzer sounded without any of the contestants offering even a guess at the solution to the clue.

The famous line came from the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln in November 1863.

Many viewers were shocked and surprised that none of the contestants knew this very simple factoid in U.S. History.

"Not know the Gettysburg Address?? Worst showing ever. None of these 3 deserved to win tonight. If they'd been asked to add 3 + 2, they'd have looked around like confused squirrels," said one critic.

"I'm gonna pretend like I just didn't see ALL THREE contestants miss 'the Gettysburg Address' just now," replied another.

"How did #Jeopardy manage to find three contestants who don't recognize the closing line of the Gettysburg Address? This isn't Elementary Jeopardy, folks," mocked another critic.

"Wow, no one knew The Gettysburg Address. That made me sad," responded another.

Some made reference to Alex Trebek, the former host of the show who passed away from pancreatic cancer in November.

"That sound you hear is Alex Trebek spinning in his grave," tweeted one

Here's a video of Mayim Bialik as host of Jeopardy!:

“Check out the classic cartoons from the 1930s through the 1950s (originally for theatrical release before the newsreel and the main feature) and see this.”

That’s what made cartoons from that era so good. They had to entertain the kids at one level and the adult audience at another level. Of course a lot of the adult humor in them is lost on younger adults—the passage of time and all that.

I can kinda understand where the motivation for “no internet”and “no TV” comes from (though total bans are extreme), but what’s supposedly so bad about diapers?

Never mind college - they weren’t even taught that in high school or grammar school.

did he host? I just have missed that. He would be good. I liked the NY bartender he competed against. He was off the charts smart, quirky, and seemed to enjoy the camera.

Lincoln was all about preserving the nation which he barely did with some very half-assed generals to start with. God seemed to favor the South with better ones but availability of necessary resources, bad communication and sheer brute manpower from the Northern aggressors prevailed.

This scenario of a Federal tyranny over the states has been upheld ever since and it's STILL wrong. We are 50 states of governments unto ourselves linked in a mutual agreement, not utterly dominated by a central power. Our Founders knew what follies ensue straying from the plan.

The quote is actually “Government of the elites, by the elites, for the elites”

I’m a Republican. I’m going with Lincoln’s version of history. You can have your Dred Scott decision/Confederate/Marxist/CRT version of history.

“I wonder if any of them know what the Gettysburg Address is.”

They probably couldn’t answer the question, “Where was the Gettysburg Address given?”

Warning: You might learn something!

Lincoln’s strategy for ending slavery wasn’t a civil war. It was to prevent the spread of slavery to the territories. Eventually and peacefully, without the carnage of a civil war, so many boys being put into the grave, very few of them slaveowners, just military age males responding to the call of duty, and without a hundred years of Jim Crow and sectionalism.

Lincoln was born and raised in Kentucky and his wife was a southern sympathizer. He was a veteran (of the Blackhawk Wars). He and his wife lost one son (to disease) prior to the war, and another (also to disease) during the war. We Republicans think of him as the most human of our presidents and wonder if he would have been able to bind our nation’s wounds had he lived.

The letters of Union soldiers are real.

Life is really complicated—”history” is always a gross oversimplification—at best.

Mythologizing a few facts...he arguably on some points.even I have always admittedly the good about Abe especially when compared to his radical associates...but he arguably ....and maybe Coolidge, Ike , Magnus of course and Trump

160 years and those are the bonafides of your Grand Old Party which has betrayed cultural warriors all my life ...63....and if you think GOPe owned conservatism ...you're as deceitful as Levin and Beck and Hannity

Trump changed everything....made all things new...thank God.. if we don’t give it back to your precious GOPe .....oh btw before I forget here's your meme

The mythology of Lincoln derives in part from his premature death. This allowed admirers to imagine almost anything. Sort of like Jack Kennedy and Princess Diana.

I agree with you regarding the failure of (almost all) Republicans to engage the other side in the culture war. Reagan and Trump were exceptions. But, as forceful as they were, Reagan was undermined and Trump was outright betrayed by others “in” the party.

Thanks in large part to Trump, we have a great opportunity to redefine the Republican Party as the party of the middle class and those in the lower class aspiring to the middle class, regardless of race or region of the country.

To paraphrase Lincoln, it is for us the living to dedicate ourselves to that great principle upon which our country was founded, that all men are created equal, and it is for us to ensure that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
