California officials are vowing to fight back after a federal judge overturned the state’s 30-year-old ban on assault weapons. In ruling the ban unconstitutional, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez compared the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle to a Swiss Army knife, calling it “good for both home and battle.”
Benitez, of the Southern District of California, issued a permanent injunction against the law’s enforcement but stayed it for 30 days to give the state a chance to appeal. California is one of seven states, plus Washington, D.C, that ban assault weapons, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

No such thing as gun violence. We all know its mostly...um, well, you-know-who violence, but the truth is forbidden.
Maybe, but I doubt we’ll ever have better odds than we do right now. We’re moving the ball in the right direction. TD is in sight.
I’m not a lawyer but: “Benitez issued a permanent injunction Friday so the law cannot be enforced.”
An Armalite Rifle, aka AR15, is not an assault rifle. It is not an automatic rifle. It’s simply a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle on steroids.
Instead, they send out flyers asking for more money.
No chance the politicians would do that. It's something for their heavily-armed security detail to deal with.
Slap him again.
Gavin Newsom Says Overturning Assault Weapon Ban ‘Disgusting Slap in the Face’
The NRA could bribe ‘me. They ALWAYS take money under the table. Throw in a week’s worth of prostitutes for good measure. 😁
Odds are the supremes will decline to hear it if the 9th upholds the ban. The supremes have never been anything but lukewarm at the very best in defense of the 2nd. They’re the ultimate swamp creatures with lifetime appointments and are very much government apparatchiks rather than defenders of us peasants.
Clarence Thomas has been a class act for decades.
There has not been an Originalist and Textualist majority on the Supreme Court since 1937.
Until 2020.
That is 83 years of increasing disdain for the Constitution to undue.
I agree
President Trump altered the 9th Circuit for the better.
I wonder if California will be pressured to not appeal. If there is no appeal, the ruling just impacts California. If it goes to the 9th circus and CA loses, it set precedents for the whole circuit. If it goes all the way to the Supreme Court it impacts the entire nation like Heller and McDonald.
It’s not really about the guns, with some people.
“It’s already stayed 30 days, and that stay will be extended indefinitely once the state appeals. It will get kicked around for about 2 years, then the 9th will reverse Judge Benitez. Another year or 2 later, we will see if SCOTUS will hear it, or if another case makes it moot. This has been the way of the 9th Circus for decades.”
And by then the Supreme Court will be packed and the Benitez decision will be reversed.
Seems to be unpredictable - some do better than others. I worked with an engineer 30 years ago, who came to work fairly pissed off, after going shooting with friends on the weekend. Apparently his buddy's Mini-14 out-performed his prized AR-15 (one of the "ABC" brands, but I don't remember which one).
Maybe the guy with the Ruger was using better quality ammo, that was better matched to his rifle. Maybe he was a better shot (although the engineer had grown up in Montana, was an experienced hunter, and definitely knew how to hit his target). Who knows? Most likely, the "Mini-14s are inaccurate" thing is just another firearms generality (like "AKs & SKSs are the most reliable rifles ever" ;^) that isn't always true...
Justice Thomas is indeed a "class act"; his opinions remind me of the writings of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. As he reminded us in 2005:
"When faced with a clash of constitutional principle and a line of unreasoned cases wholly divorced from the text, history, and structure of our founding document, we should not hesitate to resolve the tension in favor of the Constitution's original meaning."
The biggest mistake George W. Bush ever made, was failing to nominate Clarence Thomas to be Chief Justice...
Actually, the reasons were well known and it was only fixed after Bill Ruger died and he could no longer prevent modification to “his baby.” The gun was fixed starting with the 580-series in the 2000s.

In addition to the above article’s cited problems, the Mini-14 had issues with barrel whip and other barrel distortion problems, which the early 580s didn’t quite address, see this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_Mini-14#History_and_design
“In 2003, the design was overhauled to improve accuracy, update the styling, and reduce production costs. The standard Mini-14 was discontinued and the name became the family name for all Mini-14-type rifles. As of 2005, all Mini-14-type rifles are based on the Ranch Rifle design, with integral scope bases, a nonfolding ghost ring aperture rear sight, and a winged front sight similar to that used on the Ruger Police Carbine.[9] They have serial numbers beginning with 580 and are sometimes referred to as 580-series Ranch Rifles.[10] They also have a new modified gas system designed to reduce barrel vibration[9] and can shoot two-inch groups at 100 yards, which is 2 minute of angle (MOA) accuracy.[10]
Around 2007 or 2008, Ruger added a heavier, larger-diameter barrel visibly tapered from gas block to muzzle. These changes combined with tighter tolerances result in greater potential accuracy.[8] “
Very few Mini-14s prior to the 580s would shoot 2MOA stock, in fact I’d say the number is vanishingly small. You *could*, as the first article noted, make some pretty big improvements. My stepmother’s Mini-14 shot 6MOA out of the box and even with all the usual fixes it only shot 3MOA on a good day.
There was someone who posted a video on YouTube that had been recorded in the 90s where he bought ten Mini-14s and from a machine rest none of them did better than 5MOA. It was the rifles, not the shooter. These (and other non-accuracy issues) were known problems with the Mini-14 that Bill Ruger denied until the day he died, despite videos like the ones I mentioned above and even live demonstrations in front of Bill. They were fixed suspiciously quickly after he passed, though.
