The FBI has asked USA Today for the IP addresses and phone numbers of everyone who read one of its articles during a 35-minute period in February as part of an ongoing child porn probe, in what the publisher is calling a violation of the First Amendment.
On February 2, FBI agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger were killed and three others were wounded when 55-year-old David Huber started shooting as they approached his apartment in Fort Lauderdale shortly after 6am.
USA Today was among the many news outfits that covered the story on February 2. It published the story at 9.29 that morning - three-and-a-half hours after it happened.
USA Today is fighting back, saying the order violates the First Amendment.
'A government demand for records that would identify specific individuals who read specific expressive materials, like the Subpoena at issue here, invades the First Amendment rights of both publisher and reader, and must be quashed accordingly,' lawyers for Gannett, the company that owns USA Today, said.
They added said the subpoena's vague reference to 'a federal criminal investigation' cannot 'possibly justify such an abridgment of free speech.'

You nailed it;
You clicked on an Ashli Babbitt story, you are a Jan 6 terrorism supporter.
You watched a Trump rally online, you are on a watchlist.
You read a negative expose of BLM, you are a racist.
This is a very Un-American act on the part of F-Troop.
Two fewer FIB agents and I could care less.
“The FBI is now a criminal organization.”
So it would appear. This is egregious. Why do they think they should know this?
HAHA, wait’ll we find out it’s two dozen people!
Are you serious? Do you believe the FBI does anything good? You must be on a bad trip thinking it’s 50 years ago and you’re watching the FBI with Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
They’re more likely working to protect big criminal activities. Maybe they’ll go after the little rings because they want to protect the larger operations. They are Praetorian guards for the swamp. Protecting the really big criminal activities such as drug trafficking, human trafficking is where a lot of money is being made by the US government. Since criminal activities are conducted in dollars, it supports the dollar’s reserve status.
What is next? “Everyone who read an article about Jan 6th”?
In no form or fashion is this right here an acceptable door to open.
That would men you too man... all of us. The next excuse will be just as important and justified in “their” minds.
Yep... Absolutely...
Yes, but that’s not what they’re doing here. They are claiming a child pr0n reason but when pressed for details? ‘Because we said so.’
The murder of Edward Deegan took place in 1965 by an FBI informant. Rather than implicate the informant, the fbi ratted out four innocent men tried convicted and sentenced by the court to long prison terms. Corruption at all levels, including a certain Robert Mueller and thus it became known officially. Shazam, even after WACO, Ruby Ridge and others guess what is still around? You don’t want them interested in you personally.
Read up on the Deegan murder. It is worth your time to further know the deep state and it’s many players.
I was thinking the same thing. If they had bothered to go after the BLM/ANTIFA terrorists who attacked and firebombed federal buildings last summer, then I’d have a bit of sympathy, but no they’re hunting down and jailing Trump supporters for trespassing. That’s two fewer to come kicking down our doors to confiscate our guns.
And if you clicked on this story the daily mail will be happy to provide the info.
There has to be more to the story as to why the fbi was looking for this. Maybe the perp watched it.
Never thought I’d say this but... way to go usa today. I look forward to reading you on my next hotel stay.
“55 year-old man” is correct.
what happened to the 4th amendment warrant requirement?
There’s an old joke about an optimistic kid who was digging and digging in an enormous pile of manure. Someone asked him Why. The kid says, “Heck, there’s gotta be a pony in here somewhere!”
That’s how DOJ/FBI works now. They scoop up whatever they can and try to assemble a crime out of whatever. Because we are no longer a nation of laws. We are a nation of “I’ll get you”.
FBI has the browsing history of a child pron suspect and they are trying to uncover a common IP address that hit the sites in the history during a specific time window. When they find the IP that hit those sites during that window, they’re that much closer to the suspect or perp. The USAToday site and article is probably in the browsing history. I don’t know how they’re going to get names unless USAToday is a subscription site then they can match the IP to a name.
Our local SO placed an ad one time. “Body found near this remote offramp, if you have any information about it contact our Dept.”
If you even call them and say “Hey, a friend of mine is missing?” YOU will be the first primary suspect and they will make your life hell even without any probable cause or proof.
This is how they fly now...
“... it didn’t make much of a splash in the news?..”
Yes, it did. I remember clearly and the funerals were broadcast on TV. The female agent was in the lead, I think serving the warrant and took a quick and direct hit.
Any LE serving a warrant today is in serious danger. The left has stirred up disrespect for all LE and the kooks are coming out with guns blazing. Sixty years ago (in the sixties) I was in LE making arrests and serving warrants and never had a problem because times were different.
me too
USA Today is a porn site? I didn’t know that.
Yeah, that's the part that struck me more then the story itself...
