Hagia Sophia’s near-millennium as a cathedral, and the catastrophic events that led to its becoming a mosque – events that took place on this day in 1453, a day some Greek Orthodox Christians referred to as “the last day of the world.”

May 29, 1453, the armies of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II finally broke through Constantinople’s defenses after a long siege, marking the end of the Eastern Roman Empire, more commonly known as the Byzantine Empire. The conquerors were extraordinarily brutal... the Muslim soldiers “slew everyone that they met in the streets, men, women, and children without discrimination. The blood ran in rivers down the steep streets from the heights of Petra toward the Golden Horn. But soon the lust for slaughter was assuaged. The soldiers realized that captives and precious objects would bring them greater profit.”

The jihadists also entered the Hagia Sophia, which for nearly a thousand years had been the grandest church in Christendom. The faithful had gathered within its hallowed walls to pray during the city’s last agony. The Muslims halted the celebration of Orthros (morning prayer); the priests.. took the sacred vessels and disappeared into the cathedral’s eastern wall, through which they shall return to complete the divine service one day. The Muslims have this very long historical memory and emotions, often to their determine the. But I have that as to the fall of Constantinople. As a Catholic, I grieve our sack of Constantinople in 1204. We gutted the glorious continuation of the Roman Empire. It shows how powerful they were that, while it took over 200 years, they were never the same after. The fall of Constantinople is one of the darkest days in this history of the world as it led to domination of southeast Europe and west Asia by the darkness that is Islamic rule
Nope, that’d be January 20, 2021.

I skimmed the article. It was too disgusting. Muslims are animals. No, they are rabid animals.
And yet all we’re ever told about is the brutalism of the Crusades...
I will be singing that for the rest of the day!
The rest of Christendom was too busy fighting each other to come to that city’s aid. Typical.
Fortunately they were stopped at Vienna.
Yep....
They Might Be Giants did a great cover, too.
Jan Sobieski (at Vienna) and Charles Martell (at Tours) and their brothers in arms are forgotten heroes of the West.
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam.
