Vietnam says it has detected a more contagious hybrid of variants first seen in India and Britain.

Vietnam has discovered a new variant of the coronavirus that the country’s health minister said was a mix of the variants first detected in India and Britain and was also more contagious, according to news reports.

Nguyen Thanh Long, the health minister, said in a government meeting that the new variant combined the variant discovered in India with mutations from the one initially detected in Kent, England.

“The concentration of virus in the throat fluid increases rapidly and spreads very strongly to the surrounding environment,” Mr. Long said at the meeting, a recording of which was obtained by Reuters. He called the variant “very dangerous,” Reuters reported.

It was not immediately clear how fully the new variant is understood. Mr. Long cited lab cultures in discussing its transmissibility, but they may not necessarily reflect how the virus behaves in real-world situations. It was also not clear whether its prevalence is known or whether it might evade the protections afforded by vaccines or natural immunity acquired through earlier infection from a different version of the virus. Viruses mutate constantly, but most of the mutations dwindle away.

The variant detected in India, known as B.1.617, is believed to be more transmissible, the World Health Organization said this month, citing a study that had yet to be peer reviewed, and it could be more resistant against antibodies from vaccines or previous infections, according to the organization.

That variant has been spreading in Britain and now accounts for most of the new cases detected there...

Already being debunked by scientists. It’s nothing new (or special.

“NO THE SKY ISN’T FALLING. Some B.1.617.2 picked up a recurrent (homoplastic) deletion of Tyr144 that’s also seen in B.1.1.7.. we have found that mutation in July 2020 samples from Shreveport...”

The year of the “variants”. It’s amazing that this is unprecedented! /s

Wait... isn’t it racist to say this variant came from Vietnam? And during AAPI Heritage Month no less. It’s so confusing and stressful to keep track of the rules of wokism! I better wait until a sufficiently woke authority makes a call on this one... then and only then can I demonstrate my virtuous superiority by following their lead.

🙄

*Believed* to be more transmissible. (Yeah, sure.)

And, it ‘and it could be more resistant against antibodies from vaccines or previous infections’.....

Of course. So says the WHO.....an organization known for repeated lies.

Dr Lee Merritt explained, last year.....there WILL be variants. Big deal. And, that they WILL try to make a big deal out it. That’s what viruses do.

Ignore these known world *organization* liars.

Covid was definitively the result of pedestrian bioengineering of the spike protein - as was the focus of NIH sponsored research to alter the binding repertoire of coronaraviridae such that they could bind human cells (i.e. a sort of ‘gain of function’). That said, any mutations that occur are unlikely to make it better at entering human cells - and might actually make it worse at doing so. If there are mutations that allow Covid to avoid immune detection, then that would be ugly, but this is unlikely.

I don’t believe a damn word coming from WHO!! It would not surprise me one bit if China were releasing this crap AGAIN now that things are getting back to normal, of course NOTHING will happen to them AND they know it!!!

India to blame Vietnam for the Indian outbreak in 3.. 2.. 1..

It previously blamed Singapore and Taiwan

Singapore and Taiwan were pissed. They both slapped bans on Indian workers coming into their countries and cancelled work permits for those already there.

Actually Vietnam is in lockdown, we are in a much different place than America now. Almost nobody has the vaccine yet, and there is currently a breakout of sorts in the population here.

Now admittedly it is much different than the US. Because Vietnam has one of the world’s most aggressive lockdown programs, but it is quite different here now, than in America.

We are currently quite locked down right now.

Don’t mind at all. I consider it pay back for the US government working with the Indian-dominated IT industry to make me permanently unemployed in my industry, to which I was productive for 35 years. Don’t care the source or reason.

What is said above is true and this guy gets it right.

But I suspect he does not realize this is as doom foretelling as can be.

These events are indeed very unlikely. All of the events are very unlikely. 1 in billions.

The problem is there are not trillions of virus particles floating around and the replication steps where unstable processes execute number that many — trillions.

You only need a disaster mutation to happen once. 1 in a billion when you have trillions of events occurring. This is not good.

It’s not biology or virology. It’s math.

You only need a disaster mutation to happen once.

All of those trllions of viruses die rather quickly. A tiny fraction survive long enough to reach another host but they compete with each other to replicate in the new host and 99.9% of those fail. The only selection criteria is spread and siince the vast majority 9999 and many more 9's die, that really means the chances of anything but better spread are extremely low.
