Former Madigan chief of staff indicted in ComEd corruption probe

Tim Mapes served for years under former House Speaker Michael Madigan as the clerk of the Illinois House and as Madigan’s chief of staff. Now, Mapes has been indicted on a charge of lying to a grand jury in a federal bribery probe connected to the longtime former speaker.

Last summer, federal prosecutors revealed a deferred prosecution agreement ComEd entered into where the utility admitted to paying associates of Madigan in money and jobs in order to curry favor from the then-speaker. Com-Ed agreed to pay a $200 million fine and cooperate in the investigation.

Madigan has not been charged with a crime and has said he’s done nothing wrong. He is “Public Official A” in federal filings, a pseudonym that is used throughout the Mapes indictment documents and previous legal filings.

Four others associated with Madigan, including longtime confidant Michael McClain, and two former ComEd officials, were indicted several months ago and have pleaded not guilty. One former ComEd official, Fidel Marquez, has pleaded guilty in the case.

Wednesday, federal prosecutors released details about the indictment of Mapes.

“On March 24, 2021, Mapes was granted immunity to testify before the grand jury,” the news release says. “The immunity order provided that no testimony or evidence provided by Mapes could be used against him in a criminal case, except for perjury, giving a false statement, or otherwise failing to comply with the immunity order. On March 31, 2021, Mapes testified before the grand jury and knowingly made false material declarations in response to several questions about a consultant’s relationship with the Speaker from 2017 to 2019.”...

I have not really been following this since I do not live in Illinois and Ohio politicians keep me pretty busy.

Perhaps those of you from the prairie state can fill us in.

Madigan had his daughter as Illinois AG for a while, and like Obama having a fellow-travellers Holder and Lynch as head of the DOJ (and conversely, Trump having a traitor) she probably kept any investigations suppressed

As such, why did Lisa Madigan decline to run again? Especially since that’s about the time this ComEd scandal erupted. And where has she gone?

“He is “Public Official A” in federal filings...”

That’s not a good pseudonym to have in Illinois. It was previously worn by Rod Blagojevich, for one example.

Keep the focus on the old man, she didn’t do a bad job as AG and she’s adopted anyway. She went to work at Kirkland and Ellis to earn some real money.

HE is the crook-in-chief, bastard’s been in office longer than any elected official and is the best at covering his tracks. They’ve finally got a bead on him and this stupid aid was willing to perjure himself even after being given immunity, so there’s a lot of big stuff still under the damn rug. Hopefully it is so bad even democrats won’t let it stay there, not out of any love for Madigan but because of who else it might implicate.

I’m not accusing her of anything - rather, given 16 years as AG while “Dad” is the head of the State House, certainly would benefit “Dad” over any investigations or policy initiatives, wouldn’t it?

I don’t know Illinois, but I would assume the AG office there, as a mini-version of Fed.gov DOJ, is the political nerve center of the government, as they can choose to wage lawfare and investigation (or not) of anything they deem important.
