Texas poised to allow unlicensed carrying of handguns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas is poised to remove one of its last major gun restrictions after lawmakers approved allowing people to carry handguns without a license, and the background check and training that go with it.

The Republican-dominated Legislature approved the measure Monday, sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott, who has said he will sign it despite the objections of law enforcement groups who say it would endanger the public and police.

Gun control groups also oppose the measure, noting the state’s recent history of mass shootings, including those at an El Paso Walmart, a church in Sutherland Springs, and a high school outside Houston.

Texas already has some of the loosest gun laws in the country and has more than 1.6 million handgun license holders.

Supporters of the bill say it would allow Texans to better defend themselves in public while abolishing unnecessary impediments to the constitutional right to bear arms. Once signed into law, Texas will join nearly two dozen other states that allow some form of unregulated carry of a handgun, and by far be the most populous.

How many crap blog spam posts did we have to suffer through over the last month claiming Republicans we trying to sabotage this bill. There is as much fake news coming from supposedly conservative blogs as there is from CNN or Russia.

I find it interesting that there is no mention of the other 19 states that ALREADY have constitutional carry.

Excellent news. We drove from Chicago to New Orleans last week. Once we left Illinois my CCL was either valid or unnecessary. I carried openly in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Only one person took notice and that was the female armed guard at the Mississippi Welcome Center. She smiled at me and gave me a thumbs up.

Overwhelmed by pressure is the only way that this is even this close. But just like the election, don’t assume it’s over until the signature is on the line.

I don’t understand why LE would have a problem with this. The people they need to worry about already carry without a license or permit.

From what I hear, LE means blue city folks. Most sheriffs (including mine) are for it.

I hate to break it to you, but Republicans sabotaging legislation is par for the course in many states.

People of good will are right to be suspicious, distrustful, and skeptical of anything from either political party. We’ve seen this movie before, again and again and again, over and over and over.

Back in the bad old days when it was illegal to have a handgun in your auto, many patrol men ended up with great collections of guns that they had confiscated, and failed to turn in.

They don’t mention it because the People in Texas who are against Constitutional Carry cannot use any of those 19 States as an example of the terrible things they say will happen once it is Passed.

It’s like the Chicago DEMONCRATS blaming the rest of Illinois for their Gun related Deaths. The Guns flow in from other places they scream, except those “other places” do not have the same Criminal problems Chicago has.

How can that be if everywhere outside of Chicago is full of People who own Guns? The Logic, make that Irony, escapes them.

"I don't understand why LE would have a problem with this. The people they need to worry about already carry without a license or permit."

Because the fact that most conservatives fail to grasp is that "the police" as an institution is just another department of big government and it attracts the same type of people as every other big government bureaucracy. So of course as a whole they are against citizens being armed at all. They want machine guns and suppressors and night vision and body armor and FLIR and Stingrays, red flag laws on and on while the public should remain unarmed.

Of course there are many 2nd amendment supporting individual officers but the police agencies themselves are just another part of big government. I don't get why conservatives don't understand this.

I think of Vermont as having been a US state for more than 200 years and they have never ever required a permit to carry open or concealed and that for many, many of those years there was little or no violent crime in that state despite little or no gun control.
