Trucks get about 5 MPG and many civilians are driving cars that get 20 MPG & higher.

That already is a 400% higher tax rate.

HOW MUCH would you settle for???

So? Do you think the magic tax payment fairy is going to cover this for truck drivers?

Guess what: you are that magic tax fairy. The cost of everything shipped will go up.

Congratulations, genius, you just handed the likes of John Cornyn more taxes to mismanage and not spend fixing roads.

Senator Cornyn makes Senator Collins look smart. Both need to be replaced by real conservatives.

400% is no where near enough.
There reams of science to back that up.

“A 40,000 pound big rig probably does a bit more damage than your average 3500 pound consumer vehicle, right? It turns out that vehicle road damage doesn’t rise linearly with weight. Road damage rises with the fourth power of weight, and this means that a 40,000 pound truck does roughly 10,000 times more damage to roadways than the average car [1]”

“In other words, one fully loaded 18-wheeler does the same damage to a road as 9600 cars. According to the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the trucking industry represents 11% of all vehicles on the road in the US, while paying 35% of all highway taxes. But if trucks represent 11% of vehicles, their heavy loads cause them to do 99% of all road damage! [2] The trucking industry paid $35 Billion in highway taxes in 2005, according to the ATA. Since most of the $100 Billion in highway taxes paid goes to maintenance (and US infrastructure maintenance is far behind), this implies that the trucking industry receives a $60 Billion annual subsidy from other drivers.”

We the tax payers are already paying for it there already is a massive subsidy due to the diesel tax not coming anywhere close to covering the damages done by the trucks burning it. The tax is no where near 9000 times higher which test after test and study after study has PROVEN that the wear rates from truck axles is thousands of times higher. Either way the roads have to be maintained and repaired by the taxpayer. Right now the burden is largely on the nontrucker taxpayer as proven in the studies above. this moves the direct cost to the individuals causing the damages based on much reviewed science. This would shift the burden to the actual trucks causing the damages. How they finance that burden is on them but they ARE the ones doing the damages so they should pay for them why is that so hard for dipshits to understand. The science is clear and has never been in dispute since the 1950s.

Okay so they want to tax truckers for the amount of miles they drive.

1. Legislators already steal taxes that come from vehicles and add it to the General fund for their respective governmental body.

2. Roadways are in a sorry state of deuteriation and neglect. There have been roads and infrastructure that hasn’t been touched since the 1950’s. Yes, that is over 70 years of neglect. These streets only see truckers when a moving truck traverses them so the wear and tear by truckers is miniscule.

3. Government overreach has become so invasive that most people pay over 50% of their income in all forms of taxes, making disposable income less and less each year. Combine this with inflationary practices by said government and not only are Americans receiving less money for their labors than anytime before.

4. This is typical government response, if it ain’t taxed yet, tax it. If it is already taxed, put another on it and if there are several taxes on it, we need to raise the tax.

5. There is a OTR truck driver shortage. Adding more taxes will only deepen this shortage. As it has been proven time and time again, if you increase the number of people paying taxes rather than raising the taxes, you will receive more income from taxes, even if the tax rate is lower. As the tax rate rises the number of jobs decreases. This correlated tidbit of information can be seen when examining the economies of increased tax rates versus the economies of lowered taxes.

6. Government shouldn’t be looking at tax rate increases but instead should be looking to put more people into the OTR profession. They should be prioritizing citizens over all others. “Learning to code” will not work if those jobs are given to more and more individuals who are not citizens. Companies that cry out there are no skilled workers for the job should be responsible for training rather than seeking H1B (and other visas) before they can hire an H1B visa recipient.

7. Too many truck drivers aren’t even from this country and have no intentions of a) staying here indefinitely, aand b) keeping their earnings in the United States.

Increasing the tax rate is not the answer.

Increasing the amount of tax paying individuals with a tax rate at a lower or equal rate is the answer.

Bring back employee loyalty to the employer and the workforce attitude will change. Do this by empowering the employee.

In Alberta, a trucker can drive up to 13 hours a day and work up to 15 hours per day

In the United States, a professional driver getting paid for their services can drive up to 12 hours before a required six hour break from professional driving.

I would cut and paste the regulation, but it’s a pdf file.

A portion of a pdf file can be copied and pasted, unless a certain setting is used. Just because something is a pdf file does not preclude it from being copied and pasted. Also there is freeware out there that will convert a pdf into a word processing document. If you really wanted to copy and paste the regulation, there isn’t anything really stopping you. You could even use a software program to grab what is on your screen. Next time just don’t say anything about how you couldn’t copy and paste something because it speaks to laziness rather than actual effort.

10 hours driving. Either 60 hours/ 6 days or 70 hours/ 7 days without a mandatory 34 hour break.

And that expense will be passed on to consumers.

RINO Cornyn keeps getting elected on name recognition. We need term limits.

I have an idea, why not stop diverting the BILLIONS of current taxes earmarked for highway repair and maintenance from social programs back to infrastructure.

I drove interstate in the 1990s. Averaged 2500 miles a week. Overseas containers. 2500 miles X 25 cents per mile = $625 per week. $625 X 50 weeks (2 wk vacation) = $31250 per year for one truck. Does anyone think that cost will not be passed on to whoever buys whatever is in the trailer? Like I said, 2500 miles a week was in the 1990s. I have no idea what current rules and practices may be. Your mileage may vary.
