Truck-only mileage tax put back on the table by Texas senator (Cornyn)

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Tuesday suggested using a truck-only vehicle miles traveled tax during the Senate Finance Committee's hearing on infrastructure funding.

His suggested method would levy a tax of 25-cents for every mile driven. The mileage would be tracked via government-mandated devices that report the data back to the IRS.

-snip-

Texas Trucking Association President and CEO John D. Esparza noted taxing drivers a quarter for every mile equates to approximately $25,000 per truck that drives 100,000 miles a year – almost half the average salary for a truck driver.

"Eighty-eight percent of trucking businesses in Texas are small mom and pop shops already operating on paper thin margins who can ill afford to be targeted while helping the nation recover from a global pandemic," he added. "For those that can manage to survive a massive consumption tax, it will result in increased costs of goods and services for all consumers. What is bad for trucking, is bad for all Texans and a discriminatory tax will be felt by everyone."

This tax would be considered a business expense and consumers would pay the tax not truckers. A rino tells another lie

That’s an inhuman amount of taxes. An average trucker might drive 1,000 miles in a day.

That is upwards of $90,000/year.

Amazing how Cornyn is a staunch, small-government conservative at every election, and morphs into a big-state regulation and tax loving swamp creature right afterward.

Trucks do exact a toll on the roads, but so do cars. If the Federal government were serious, they would make sure existing gas taxes are actually used for highways and demand that the states pony up a share of a real maintenance schedule for interstate highways or lose their highway funding. Instead, the states do nothing until the roads are falling apart and then get bailed out by the Feds.

What a jerk Cornyn is.

This is just another way to sneak in gps location data for all vehicle. First for commercial trucks, then for everyone.

The same route they followed to make driver's licenses into identification cards.

I think truckers are limited to 11 hr/day.

At 80 mph, that’s only 880 mi.

No kidding. I bet there will be an exemption for large retailers (Walmart, Amazon) and unionized shipping companies (UPS).

We have the best government money can buy!

I wonder if this ass-hat ever considered that spending is too high and they need to instead look for ways to pare down gov’t.

What a dope.

Amazing that this measure would originate with a Republican from Texas, a state whose population is spread out, forcing many to drive long distances to reach their destinations. And most of those hit by the new tax will be Republican voters.
