For more than 50 years, the New York State Bar Association has been headquartered in a row of historic townhouses located at One Elk Street in downtown Albany.
But state bar leaders, and many within its organization, say it’s time for hard financial realities to trump sentimentality.
Repairs and renovations for One Elk are expected to run $18 million over the next 10 years while revenues from membership dues are on the decline.
According to current estimates, the state bar could run a $6 million deficit in its operating budget in 10 years if it does not change course, President-Elect T. Andrew Brown told the Law Journal.

Lawyers? Headquarters? New York? Shouldn’t they be headquartered in the back room of a whore house?

Can’t they just sue each other for the money?
I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians too
I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers guns and money
Dad get me out of this (ha)
I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between a rock and a hard place
And I'm down on my luck
Yes I'm down on my luck
Well I'm down on my luck
And I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers guns and money
The shit has hit the fan
Send lawyers guns and money (ugh)
Send lawyers guns and money (hit it)
Send lawyers guns and money (ooh... hey uh) (hey uh... yeah)
Almost 180,000 New York lawyers. Full dues are $275 a year. (Note, -lawyers admitted to the bar less than 5 years, and some out of state lawyers do pay less. This is offset by lawyers who live or work in New York, but are members of the bar elsewhere and who pay. So, say somewhere short of $50 million a year to spend. Budget of $23 million. (For some reason, they seem to only collect $9 million a year in dues. Which would mean only 32,000 lawyers actually pay dues. Compared to Texas with 95,000. Even Georgia has 32,000 lawyers.
I may have spotted the problem.
I have a solution. Move the HQ to Florida because of lower taxes.
If the Bar Association actually policed the lawyers and made sure they were ethical maybe there wouldn’t be a financial problem.
Check the payroll costs first.
