...But excuse me if I, like many of the people I see around me, am not yet quite ready to expose my lower face. Early on in the pandemic, I made a vow with my family that we would set a high standard for COVID-19 avoidance. Not only were we not getting this virus ourselves, if we could help it, but we were taking no chances of inadvertently spreading it to anyone else, even if that did make for a long and lonely year without indoor gatherings and travel to see family and friends.
...
The vaccines are remarkably effective, but not 100%. Breakthrough infections among vaccinated people have occurred (witness the cluster of cases among the New York Yankees), and the science about whether and how the virus can be transmitted by the vaccinated to the unvaccinated is not yet certain. Putting aside the hard science for a moment, wearing a mask in public spaces—especially indoors, where transmission is more likely—serves a broader social purpose: It says to those around us that, whatever our vaccine status, we value community safety.
When I walk outside my door into a densely populated neighborhood, I know as little about the life circumstances of the people I encounter as they do about mine. Are they, like me, fully vaccinated? Or are they in between shots, still looking for an appointment, or never planning to get a vaccine at all? Might they be in chemotherapy, or otherwise immunocompromised in some way that would prevent them from either getting a vaccine or experiencing its full benefits?
...
But if...some of us simply find comfort in going around with a scrap of cloth on our face, we can be forgiven for choosing to leave it there until the world feels like a safer place for everyone.

I guess no one wanted to hear about Fernando Pessoa!
Roger that.
Dear Dana - please continue wearing as many masks as you want. We don’t care. Just PLEASE don’t take your clothes off.
Thanks
The Male Population
After I read through the article, the site listed the most popular articles from recent issues of the Atlantic; if I recall correctly, the second most popular had something to do with the evolutionary origin of many of their contributors, presumably including this Stevens person.
“Vaccines are not 100% effective but that’s not what she said.”
She said they were “remarkably effective.” I’m willing to go all the way down to one person. One. You show me one person who was immunized against the ‘rona by one of those experimental substances, and I will agree to call it “remarkably effective.”
“There are about 200 deaths total from breakthrough infections compared to 600 a day from COVID and over 3000 a day at the peak.”
Facepalm. You believe that crap? Really? The CDC just announced that only about 6% of the deaths formerly attributed to the ‘rona were actually caused by the COVID-19. That’s about 9,000 start to finish.
“That is what I would call “remarkably effective”
Would’ja? None of the gunshot victims marked down as ‘rona deaths were saved by any of the vaccines.
We have been viciously gaslighted regarding this non-existent “pandemic,” and you chose to believe people in one of two categories: malevolent liars, and the abysmally stupid.
You seem to have some hostility toward me, so find someone who is very intelligent and disagrees with you on this matter. Then listen carefully as he explains his reasoning.
I don’t want to see her dumb ole face anyway. Maybe her teeth will rot.
Oh. So she’s one of them there west-coast intellectuals.
That explains it.
I’ll excuse you for wearing one if you’ll excuse me for not wearing one.
The Atlantic is also owned by the Chinese.
I would be very happy if I never saw another article by them posted here.
IOW, by her own admission, she's virtue signalling.
I'll be the one. I took an antibody test a few weeks ago and J&J today. I'll test again for antibodies starting in a few weeks.
Facepalm. You believe that crap? Really? The CDC just announced that only about 6% of the deaths formerly attributed to the ‘rona were actually caused by the COVID-19. That’s about 9,000 start to finish.
511,000 more deaths in 2020 from all causes than 2019. If we hadn't had COVID and some incredibly stupid public policies like canceling conventional medical treatment, we would not have had 511,000 more deaths. The sixx percent number is pretty meaningless.
I find it amazing that the same people that argue that nobody died of COVID last yrear are arguing that everyone is dying from the vaccine this year. Is pointing that out a hostile act? Or a Micro-aggression?
511,000 backed up by state numbers. Now you are going to have to pull in all the state health departments into your conspiracy.
Pavlov’s dog didn’t wear masks. So you may ask yourself what wild animal DOES have feathers or fur completely covering their nostrils and mouth? Try an internet search engine and click on pictures. The answer is none. Sooooooo....why aren’t all these animals extinct because of some deadly disease?
I'm afraid this poor darling is only qualified to make spit babies. And spit babies rarely grow to adulthood.
Oh.
He was a nutcase portuguese poet who though it was a really cool thing to play games with names. Died about 1935. Just the sort of subject for a dissertation guaranteed to evoke little interest but easy to pass oral defense because nobody on your doctoral committee knew anything about him either.
Knock yourself out, dummy. She needs to see the lab tests on masks worn for any length of time. Nasty.
The vaccines are remarkably effective, but not 100%.
Which is why she keeps wearing a cloth mask that is ...oh lets see......0% effective. Honestly who cares what an atheist thinks.
No one in official positions will even address the topic of side effects. The silence is deafening.
I watched the entire CDC press conference a few days ago. Not one question was asked (allowed, it seems) about side effects.
Not quite. The majority owner is the Emerson Collective, a for-profit corporation focused on education, immigration reform, the environment, media and journalism, and health. Founded by Laurene Powell Jobs (Steve Jobs’ widow), the LLC uses philanthropy, impact investing, advocacy, and community engagement as tools to spur change in the United States and abroad
