The FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office is conducting an investigation into the death that took place Monday in a courtroom at the Federal Courthouse in Fargo.
Following a guilty verdict and after the jury left the courtroom, 55-year-old Jeffrey Ferris of Belcourt, North Dakota used an easily concealable instrument to take his own life. Ferris died in the courtroom.
Ferris had been found guilty of reckless endangerment, terrorizing, and use of a firearm in relation to a felony crime of violence. The mandatory minimum sentence was seven years in federal prison. Ferris was found not guilty of eight counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
The FBI will determine whether there was any violation of federal criminal laws. Any violations would be reviewed by the US Attorney’s Office.
The U.S. Marshal’s Service is responsible for security of the courthouse in Fargo.
The agency will review security procedures in the building.

"The FBI will determine whether there was any violation of federal criminal laws. Any violations would be reviewed by the US Attorney’s Office."Suicide in a courtroom is unacceptable. They should throw the book at him.

And if he had survived, he should get the death penalty for trying in the first place.

“easily concealable instrument”
What would that be? Asking for a friend.

One missing clue from article:
“You could hear him screaming, ‘I can’t breathe.’”

I was wondering that too. A few years ago there was a big Mafia trial at the Federal Courthouse in Boston that I attended for a few days (it involved a very famous local boy,Whitey Bulger). Upon entering the courthouse each day I was searched thoroughly and when the beeper went off (because of my metal hips) I was taken aside for further scrutiny. I doubt that I could have even sneaked a toothpick into that courthouse, let alone a lethal weapon.

Forgot to mention...before the start of one of the day's proceedings I got to chat (briefly) with the prosecutor who was portrayed in the film Black Mass, the true story of Whitey Bulger...formerly of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list (just below Bin Laden).

OK, now that’s really funny.

I guess some guys don’t mind the prison life but some that get out no matter what as in this case will they go back into that system.

Not sure what he really did, some stories called it “stalking related incidents.”

Hi.
Possibly a polymer knife?
I have one that is six inches and can both stab and cut.
Easily concealed, no metal, difficult to find in a body search.
