HUD to Spend $5 Billion on 70,000 Housing Vouchers for the Homeless
The Epoch Times ^ | May 18, 2001 | Mark Tapscott

Posted on 05/18/2021 4:30:39 PM PDT by Yong

Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge plans to spent $5 billion under President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) to fund 70,000 housing vouchers for homeless people between now and 2030.

“While most of us spent more time in our homes than we ever have, more than half a million Americans had to spend the last year either in crowded shelters or sleeping outside,” Fudge said in announcing the program.

$5 Billion?

What happened to
If you give a man a fish he can eat for a day
but teach a man how to fish
and he will will eat for a lifetime.

A greeting card I saw of a man in his fishing gear, looking contented and smiling,
“Give a man a fish and he eats for a day.
Teach a man how to fish
and he’ll sit in a boat drinking all day.”

Homeless folks are an issue for state governments.

States without a great homeless issue should not be paying federal taxes for an issue that does not involve their own state citizens.

Gee, over $71 K a piece.

And would you bet against them still sitting outside in a flimsy vinyl tent and going to the bathroom on the public sidewalks?

Money always disappears before the intended target.

Homeless folks are an issue for state governments.

States without a great homeless issue should not be paying federal taxes for an issue that does not involve their own state citizens.

California, New York, Texas and Florida have 50+% of the homeless issue. They are big enough states to pay for their own homeless issue, and the states with smaller rates of homeless can afford to deal with their smaller homeless problem. There is no need for this to be a federal issue with a federal agency, federal rules and the additional federal taxes and borrowing to pay for it.

$71,000 per person? Per family unit?
70,000 vouchers. That will be enough to maybe house the homeless that live in the City of Los Angeles. Not nearly enough for all of the homeless.

On another thread I half joked (but was half serious) that maybe much more effective to actually build compounds like Rajnesshpuram in Oregon in the early 1980s. They housed thousands of people in very modest living quarters, with central dining and entertainment venues and bathrooms and showers. But they were sound construction, sanitary, simple, larger than a tent or camper, you could lock the doors and arrange them like mini track homes. A few 1000 acres could house 100,000 people if done right. They would need permitting exemptions to do it affordably. Which isn’t to say it would be done poorly, just cut the red tape and do it.

Of course the real problem is, many of the homeless like to live near the drugs and prostitution. They won’t want to move to a rural housing area. Of course if they did, the drug dealers will find them.

Of course it’s housing for illegals.
They live better than most in Oregon and don’t work

California gifted the city of Los Angeles 1300 single axle towed campers for the homeless, during the pandemic. Thread was posted here recently. Those things cost about $30k a piece, new. The city has them in storage in some parking lots. Never used them.

100,000 people added to the voting list. Who would want this?

I’d sleep in a tent for a year to make $71,000.

Sure pays better than waiting tables.

Money always disappears before the intended target.

Exactly

The way the skim works these days is that the "homeless" money goes to local "nonprofits" (sometimes with states and/or cities getting a cut, sometimes not).

The "nonprofits" are politically connected and kickback money to local politicians. In addition they pay themselves large salaries and benefits and/or steal lots of money under the table.

Then there are contractors who need to be politically connected to win any contracts (more kickbacks to politicians).

The Democrats have the skim and scam down to a science.

That is what they really mean when say "follow the science"!

Yes you got it. Money is allocated. It goes to a department of bureaucrats with plush offices, car allowance, benefits, assistants and staff. They re-allocate it to other groups, each in charge of various facets food, medicine, clothing, ‘regional territories” etc each with their own offices, cars, staff overhead. Those groups then sub contract to various enterprises to provide the food, medicine, clothing etc each also with their own overhead. Who then subcontract it to people doing court ordered community service who hand the stuff out without getting paid.

Total graft. All those people vote for the status quo, and more of it.
