Will he or won’t he? Both Republicans and Democrats are anxious to know if the 87-year-old Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley will run for re-election. Both sides agree that with Grassley on the ballot, Iowa will remain safely Republican. But if Grassley chooses to hang it up, all bets are off and Iowa becomes a battleground.
Iowa has been trending a little redder in recent elections. Donald Trump carried the state with ease in 2020 and Republicans control both the statehouse and U.S. Senate seats as well as having a Republican governor. The other Republican Senator, Joni Ernst, just won reelection in 2020. The more radical the Democrats get, the more they lose in Iowa.
But Grassley’s age may become an issue if, as expected, he attracts primary challengers. Even though he still runs two miles several days a week and does pushups, there are plenty of Republicans who are angry with him for his efforts to reach across the aisle to Democrats on several issues like criminal justice reform and drug prices. But he is a widely respected figure on the Hill and has coasted to victory his last six elections. He routinely gets more than 65 percent of the vote and has occasionally topped 70 percent.
It’s clear that if he wants to run, he’ll be re-elected with similar numbers.

Time to go.
Don't be a Strom Thurmond. Retire.
90 is the new 60
He was ill for awhile. If he falls...does he get replaced with a Republican? If so...keep on trucking Senator Grassley.
make room for a trump conservative... and younger blood, who knows how to handle social media attacks.
Iowa has been trending a little redder in recent elections.
How can a anyone be this illogical and maintain any credibility?
“Both sides agree that with Grassley on the ballot, Iowa will remain safely Republican. But if Grassley chooses to hang it up, all bets are off and Iowa becomes a battleground.”
Not true, not in an off-year election with this bunch in the White House. Not even close.
News is easier to report if you just make up the facts and conclusions to fit your chosen narrative. Reporting like this is standard issue these days

A little redder? Then what would a lot redder look like? With that kind of power in the state, the Republicans should be able to come up with a suitable replacement for Grassley.
Grassley is a useless deep state shill. Ernst has followed his lead.
It’s time to replace Grassley with younger blood! Thanks for your safe Republican vote and not being a Flake, McCain, Murkowski, Collins etc. Retire, enjoy your remaining days Senator !! Bringing in new leadership in this off-year election (No Dem. will win in Iowa especially after 2 years of this most terrible administration destroying everything American! Every Republican vying for Presidential nomination in 2024 will be in the Hawkeye state campaigning for the Republican nominee.... heck, Trump might even find Cedar Rapids!
We can and must do a lot better than Bush League Republicans.
I understand what you are saying, but this guy doesn’t seem to know what his narrative is supposed to be!
Is he just using a screaming headline to draw people to his blog?
His article seems to contradict his message.
And no, I did not click through.
Agree. Run, serve awhile, then step down.
❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The danger is if a Dem governor wins and appoints a Dem.

All these business as usual, bullshit election stories.
87 years old?
This is the problem with politicians. Who has the party been grooming to take his place?
No one?
The potential for him dying in office at 85 is significant. But if party has not been preparing for his replacement, they are negligent.
No one over 70 should be elected. Certainly, no one over 80 should even be considered. If the party in Iowa doesn’t understand this, then shame on them.
You are correct. I was assuming that Iowa would remain with a Republican Governor.
FALSE, at that age one is not able to run, just not possible..I want to see him do that so called RUN...
He maybe does a little trot, but not for two miles...
He needs to prove me wrong..
AGE MATTERS and he is too old to be in Congress..just like DIFI of CA. she is so lost in the woods, media doesn't even show her any longer...and she rolls over to 88 in June..coloring ones hair, doesn't make them youthful again..in fact it ages them...
What ever, just my opinion.
According to this annuity chart, the life expectancy for an 87 year old is 5 years.
https://www.annuityadvantage.com/resources/life-expectancy-tables/
The reason this is relevant is that all of those 5 years are not productive. Chances are there will be a decline and end of life process that takes a year or so.
Therefore, re-elected for a 6 year term at 87 is a losing proposition. At best...you are going to get three years out of the man. Probably two.
So...the replacement for his six years will come during the next Presidential campaign. And at that time you will get higher turn out for both parties and you stand a chance of losing the seat at a greater rate than you would in 2022.
So Chuck, have a seat. Iowa...get someone else to run.
